The power steering pump in my '86 has recently become very noisy (high pitch whine, increases with rpm).  I've checked the fluid level and it's OK.
Anyone know if it's interchangeable with a local pump?  Can it be rebuilt here by someone like Pedders or am I better off ordering a rebuilt unit from the US for $100-$150?

If the fluid is more than a year or so old, I'd replace it first and see.

I had the same thing in my C5 when it got hot. Replacing the fluid cured the problem. Apparently the fluid will absorb a lot of moisture and eventually will cause the problems you describe.

Of course you might just have a shot pump as well...

my 87 leaked lots of fluid when i was replacing the water pump, sent it in 2 a friend in Para, he then sent it 2 a local pump rebuild place, and now it is as good as new.... i dont think yours would have any issues rebuilding.

Thanks guys, I've forked out US$30 for a "no noises when removed" used pump.  We'll see how it goes, otherwise I'll send my existing pump off to be rebuilt locally.
