help on my horn

horn does not work...whee do i start? relay? if do where is the relay located?...do u suggest any  auto electical shop specialisin in american vehicles?

took it today to this guy on buffalo road...he was scratching hios head...he did not know where to start or the job is 2 small for him....so if u recommend some1...pls let me know

Joe... i think you need to place this thread in the pre 84 forum.

I recommend that you firstly start with taking the horn off, or testing it on the car like advised... that way you can figure out if the horn is okay or not... then work backwoods.

The horn may only need some adjusting, i recall on an old car i had in my younger days that they needed oiling...im not sure now..

Then if you know the horn is okay, then work on the wiring system.

I have the wiring diagram for my 69 Vette, i can copy it at work and give you a copy... it should be the same..

Assuming you have checked for the obvious stuff like a blown fuse I would say Michael is on the money in my opinion.

Get a schematic if you can and follow the wiring and see if you have current at different points to pinpoint where the problem is.  Check to make sure the horn button has a good contact and then see if you have power at the horn and work your way back from there.

You should be able to do this with a test light and then go from there.

I'm sure a few of the other guys here will chime in.

69 DIRTY RAT

check the "horn contact" which is directly under the cap of the middle of the steering wheel, it just prys off (carefully!). See that it makes contact with the other parts under it. I have dissassembled mine before its not that hard. Buy a steering wheel puller from Supacheap, I dont think they cost much and is always handy for use if you need it later. Basically it pulls the nut away from the column. then its easy to look and check all the contacts down further in the column. Just remember the order it came off! Like the others said also, see if a electrician can pin point the problem to see if the problem could be else where. Check the actual horn, a wire may not be contacting?

I have already dont that andy...took it off and all the parts were inside it but do u know whther it is making contact assuming the part that ur were mentioning it...( i pushed it all the way with a needle and still nothing happened!!!

Its possible that a part maybe in the wrong place???? they tend to look a bit similar or one is upsidedown???
So you checked the actual horn? allwires conected?
I forget now which bits actually contact inside there, I think its that L shaped thing on the thing on the left/top of the picture? It touches another ring to make contact?

I had a problem with my '77, except the horn was always on.  There is 1 wire that connects to the bit where the spring and plunger sits.  When you pro\ess the centre cap it must complete the circuit on the ring in the top left of the pic and sound the horn.

I never figured out how to fix it!  :b2  Good luck!

mate i have tried many times and no luck....so on monday will b taking it to the auto electr...it is not as easy...could b anything especially u havent got the tools...ur limited with tests

Did ya fix the horn?

If not I can help ya out.  Just completing a complete rewire on the 77.  Pretty well know all the in and outs of her nervius system now.


PS:- Yyour horn button earths out the feed to the horn relay.  In most cases all relays have active to their coil and any switches ground out the other side.  The horn wire runs down the steering column in the rainbow ribbon.  It in turn terminates at a mouth organ connector on the side of the steering column.  It's a simple matter of unplugging the mouth oran connector and checking the circuit there.

Did the horn always work?  Did it just stop?  Some history if you already have not fixed it.

hey Cam...
this morning i was supposed to take it to the elctrician cos simply i am not techy person....but the weather was so bad  so i have decided to postpone it...
i really appreciate your offer and i simply cant refuse it...if that means driving the car to a suitable place at your request  i am willing to do so.

oh and the history of the horn...it was not working wen i bought the car...but previous owner rekons it worked...mmm...;-)

No problem.  My vette is at my factory at Ingleburn, near Campbelltown.  That's where I have all my tools so there would be a good spot.  Pretty well any time as I'm always there, except this sunday the 22nd Jan, going to Castle Hill to have a sticky beak.
