RMS and Number Plates
« on: December 17, 2018, 04:11:06 PM »
Recently acquired a 90 Corvette.

The owner wanted to keep the fitted US personalised plates.

No Worries!. After plate swaps, I ended up with Black on White plates, which as we know cover the reversing lights on the rear, and dont fit on the front, (C4)
No worries I'll reluctantly lash out on some US Style plates @ $308, thats of course with the original random numbers, ie nothing special.
Specialised plates are OK, but not at their prices or the ongoing yearly charges (rip off). Paid my money and wait 4 them 2 b made.

Just recieved the letter to come and get them - great - got home & tried to fit them, but they have NO mounting Holes punched in them.

Rang RMS - explained the situation, she put me on hold, then some more hold, then a little more, then came back with a "bullsh#t" story on how all fittings are different, therefore no holes, I must do them.
I explained that over 68 years, all the different plates I'd recieved had holes - multiply holes - punched by them for mounting.

I have no drill or drill bits, appears that each and every customer must first buy an electric drill and then butcher the NEW Plates - Yes She agreed that is what I must do. I did not regress into the vageries of rust or the law pertaining to defacing Number Plates.

Am I being pedantic here, or are Australians just tooo easily led by the nose by Politicians or Burecrates who cut corners at our expense especially when we pay thru the nose for "SERVICE !!!".

Bfit have you got US style plates and a hole punch (prefer punch not drill)

Stick them on your dash board . When the nice police man pulls you over explain to him that the RMS are out of holes and you are waiting to be supplied with some when they have stock . EASY

My081,
I love your comment. Reminds me of that joke where the cops have the tautliner truck pulled over and one of the cops is on his radio saying to the chief.... “He says he’s haulin sailboat fuel but the truck’s empty! What should we do?”

Vetech,
My son (‘86 C4 owner) can’t believe you don’t own a drill or bits. I told him you were probably joking.

Merry Christmas everyone.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said.
But I am not sure you realise that what you heard is not what I meant.😱

I would not believe  that either Hallsy.

What I really needed was the template, my dad would say "measure twice - cut once" in reality I could measure 99 times and get 99 different bits.

Was not joking - more - being facetious.

My point was - what happens when "the little Ole Lady from Pasedena" buys plates, she's 80 in the shade and does not have a drill or bits, every other plate I've seen in the last 60 odd years has a plethora of holes. These plates are alluminium, printed, coated and sealed - not any more, they have fresh holes ready to recieve corrosion.

I just think we Australians put up with Systemic short cutting and ripoffs by Govt's and their agents all too often.

MyPlates is a private subcontractor to RMS, hence why the plates are a rip off ... and they are after maximum profits whereas before when the RTA ran the show any extra they made was going back to the govt. to spend on roads, wars, Israel, etc.

When the RTA were in control, if you wanted custom three letters and three numbers (ABC-123) it was a one off payment plus the cost of having the new plates made, now it's a yearly fee for that.

Also, if your plates are damaged and you want the same combination, you have to custom order them and pay a yearly fee because you didn't get the first plates off the rack.

Vettech, I changed to random USA style because I was sick of have prison sex with MyPlates each year...
Debating the logic of their price structure gets nowhere. Believe me, I had a really solid go at them including social media posts on there Facebook page, letters/emails, stern words with the poor buggers at the RMS (still feel a bit guilty about that one...). If you have time and enough resilience to make headway, please share your results so that we can leverage your base line.
I just checked my plates and yep, they are 100% clean with the exception of my two mounting holes. Looks like you need to display your Aussie spirit, suck it up, and borrow your Nanna’s drill and use your adaptability to get the job done. 😂😂
Maybe send MyPlates an invoice for tool rental and your time...

Yes, thats what I did, just got the ones on it remade in US size, Sabre used his template and drills etc - did a nice job.

They are fitted and dont look tooo bad. At least I have no on going costs. They fill the gaps and dont cover the reversing lights

Ummm a bill, umm would it come under section:  245T  - no no thats restrictive trade practice, maybe under something else........

Interesting - got some plate holders from Supercheap for xmas for D4's car, her plates are  TJ 40 RD in Pink on White.
But could see nill covers/holders for US size. I seem to remember Sabre made his own from bulk acrylic sheet.

A job 4 v new year.

Could make them yourself, or take my lazy way out and get some from Summit...
https://www.summitracing.com/int/search/part-type/license-plate-frames?SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending&tw=Plate&sw=License%20Plate%20Frames
If you every get a chance to visit a Summit location, it’s worth going out of your way for. My local was the Tallmadge, OH store. Absolutely awesome experience 😎👍

Ah ha....... unless I want to go to the States, there is no local Summit here in Oz that I know off.

I think they were deregistered by ASIX in 2014. Pity.

Maybe Rocket Ind, they are not too far away, a nice run to clear the cobwebs, else its Bunnings DYI..

The #plates do need something to finish them off.....

Have you tried Auto One. They do H plate covers now via special order so they might have worked out there's a market for US size.

Just out of interest.. There will be a range of license plate surrounds shortly that are made specifically to fit the NSW historic plates & the NSW RTA American Muscle Plates.. Nothing super fancy but a short range of colours also. Something to dress them up.

Dozens to choose from on ebay starting at $10. $140 buys you stealth plates that hide your number at the touch of a remote. I'm sure the boys in blue would understand.
