1969 L89 Ragtop
« on: April 18, 2013, 10:07:16 PM »
Just purchased a pretty rare car
1969 L89 ragtop,auto, 6,600rpm shift kit,  3.70 rear,  according to the NCRS only 5 ragtop L89 auto,s ever built
Monza Red,  black leather,  pw,ps, tint wind, speed warning  37,000miles original
3 owner car,  never wrecked,  spoke to the original e reckons not much beat him
Original backing sheet from Harry Mann chev when he ordered it
Originally orderd it with 4 speed and side pipes but changed his mind  because his mate had  a auto L88 and reckoned the special high performance modded high shift point turbo 400 smacked everything
So it was crossed out on the form,  and went the alloy heads to keep the weight down and his mate had them on his L88
I had a auto L71 coupe 10 years ago,  regretted selling it, quick car, been looking ever since
Exactly the car i would have ordered $6,400 in 1969 , what a bargain

i only use it as an indication of whats there and what isnt , ive owned 7 x 435 cars , only ever judged one of them , that was enough
this baby is getting headers , wide tyres ,ralley wheels with no trim rings lowered , done up nastalia , like it would have been drag raced in the 70,s

Ive tried, keeps saying file to large
Got an email reply today from the original owner , he was excited to hear from me,  wants to have a chat
How gold is that,  its hard finding real documented cars,  if ur lucky a list of some previous owners
Having contacts with all 3 , especially the guy who bought it new is unreal
He told me that in 1968 he was working for honeywell in New York and was sent to LA to work on the B1 Bomber project
He lived in hollywood, he ordered the car from Harry Mann chev '
He couldnt order the car with air cond,  so he bought a 2nd hand unit from a wrecker in LA and fitted it,  made his own alarm system ( which he said saved the car from getting stolen 3 times)
And a luggage rack (yuk)
Cruise control and a different electronic module for the ignition from a  69 olds
Clocked about 37,000miles, and parked her in about 1976because of fuel issues and the brakes,  thats where it sat till 1997.
When he parked it up the engine was running fine
The only accident it had was in a parking lot,  someone backed into it and damaged a rear quarter,  , about the size of a plate he reckons
Trying to find some old photo,s
All the drivetrain was original,  the engine did have some major warranty work on it,  a valve issue damaged the head and piston
He remembers taking it to las vegas when brand new to get it regoed ashe had family there and the rego was cheaper
I,ll see what else i can learn from him

Yeah I.m kinda blown away.  Theirs so many fake cars out there now. I knocked back another car as it had nothing to back it up.  After talking to the guy for a month he suddenly finds a protector plate
Their even forging those now
So getting the info from the first owner is gold
He told me it was nearly a grand for the alloy heads option thats why he ditched the luver trims and the side pipes.  That was big coin in 69
His original order came to $6,400 less his $100 deposit
I.ll have 2 please. Lol

I recieved another email
He was given the L89 as a gift from his parents for graduating from UCLA ' i magine that ur parents telling you to go to the dealer and order whatever car u want, he probably tried  to get a L88and was told u couldnt get one ,he was 23 at the time ,mainly used for zooming around the streets as he says, he did drive it across the states from LA to Upstate NY,  he said it was always a hassle trying to keep it in tune,  he got married pretty soon after and didnt have the time bringing up a family,
When he parked it up it still had its original tripower on it , and alternator,  dizzy etc,  he changed the waterpump to a alloy high flow and a fan with more blades of the aircond wreck he took parts off to get it running cooler in LA,
He found the original jack and workshop manuals he got with the car , so i,ll nab them
