The 17/18 staggering doees look good though. I was planning 18's all around.

Now that I've had 18's all round I reckon it's just a little too big in the front. Needs that tiny bit more tire in my opinion.

I just got 18x8 all round 4" backspace and am about to fit. 245/45/18 front 255/45/18 rear.
When you say needs more tyre on the front from what perspective....
If you go 18 and 17 the actual sidewall height is roughly the same given you go 27" on back and 26" on front to give the staggered look.

If you look at my sig pic - thats the 18's I had on front and rear with same size tires front and rear (245/45/18). When I said needs more tire - I meant that on the front the 18 looks that little bit too much from the side view and the 17 would look better. Just my opinion.
--- End quote ---
Understand.....I contemplated the staggered look heaps as well before going 18 all round.
The only concern I had was that if you go 17/18 you need to then lower the front even more to get rid of the extra air gap to the guards with 26" or less fronts.
However done properly like the one above it does look good.

Hey Wabco,
Ya reckon you'll have the bend the inner lips up on your guards or do you reckon they'll fit without scrubbing????

The fibreglass lips won't bend very far!!!!
No the 275 tyres will fit in the guards ok. With 5.25" backspace it might even be possible to fit 285's before they start to rub on the chassis.

I also considered wheel size for a long time before buying another set. Having the 17/18 combo I didn't want a large gap between the tyre and guard as well. However with a mono leaf front end and 10" link bolts on the rear it makes it very easy to adjust the stance of the car to sit just right.

HiWebco40, demonx, craigh,
and everybody else in on this conversation about wheels size,
Well if i was cofused before i am even more now.
I also am looking at purchasing wheels for my '71 and the biggest that will fit the better without any modification.
SO if i was going 17" all round it would be 17x8 (4"bs) ???
And
if i put 18" on the rear the can be18x9.5 with (5.25 bs) ???
Would this be correct or have i still got it wrong ??
Appreciate your input
Scott:
On the rear, things get tricky. Wide rubber will either hit the guards, or the chassis/trailing arm/rear spring. Most people prefer to make their tyres wider on the inside to avoid flares. First thing you will hit is the trailing arms, but because of the shape of the trailing arm, larger diameter rims will actually clear the arm if you relocate the handbrake cable set-up. Smaller rims will not and require offset trailing arms. The next thing you start hitting is the end of the spring. Depending on the wheel size and how low the car is, the spring may go inside the rim, but it depends on a few things and the car needs to be sitting fairly high to make it happen. The other option is a shorter spring which keeps the ends further away from the tyre.
