I also have the retro look with 17x8 (4" bs) with Nitto 245/45/17 for the front and 18x9.5 (5.25" bs) with Nitto 275/40/18 for the rear.

I would have liked to have gone wider on the rear but didn't want to fit flares and also wanted to keep the tyres contained in the fenders.

Hey Wabco,

Ya reckon you'll have the bend the inner lips up on your guards or do you reckon they'll fit without scrubbing????

I wouldn't try 'bending' the lips of the guards :club:

Going from a 4 inch bs to a 5+ inch BS will put the wheel over an inch closer in and since the tyre isn't that much wider, it won't be too near the guard at all.  I want to run a minimum 275 on the rear of mine and I imagine it will be fun and games experimenting with width, offset and car height to get it to fit right.

The 17/18 staggering doees look good though.  I was planning 18's all around.

Now that I've had 18's all round I reckon it's just a little too big in the front. Needs that tiny bit more tire in my opinion.

I just got 18x8 all round 4" backspace and am about to fit.  245/45/18 front 255/45/18 rear.

When you say needs more tyre on the front from what perspective....

If you go 18 and 17 the actual sidewall height is roughly the same  given you go 27" on back and 26" on front to give the staggered look.

If you look at my sig pic - thats the 18's I had on front and rear with same size tires front and rear (245/45/18). When I said needs more tire - I meant that on the front the 18 looks that little bit too much from the side view and the 17 would look better. Just my opinion.

Understand.....I contemplated the staggered look heaps as well before going 18 all round.

The only concern I had was that if you go 17/18 you need to then lower the front even more to get rid of the extra air gap to the guards with 26" or  less fronts.

However done properly like the one above it does look good.

The fibreglass lips won't bend very far!!!!

No the 275 tyres will fit in the guards ok. With 5.25" backspace it might even be possible to fit 285's before they start to rub on the chassis.

I also considered wheel size for a long time before buying another set. Having the 17/18 combo I didn't want a large gap between the tyre and guard as well. However with a mono leaf front end and 10" link bolts on the rear it makes it very easy to adjust the stance of the car to sit just right.

HiWebco40, demonx, craigh,
and everybody else in on this conversation about wheels size,
Well if i was cofused before i am even more now.
I also am looking at purchasing wheels for my '71 and the biggest that will fit the better without any modification.

SO if i was going 17" all round it would be 17x8 (4"bs) ???
And
if i put 18" on the rear the can be18x9.5 with (5.25 bs) ???

Would this  be correct or have i still got it wrong ??

Appreciate your input

On the rear, things get tricky.  Wide rubber will either hit the guards, or the chassis/trailing arm/rear spring.  Most people prefer to make their tyres wider on the inside to avoid flares.  First thing you will hit is the trailing arms, but because of the shape of the trailing arm, larger diameter rims will actually clear the arm if you relocate the handbrake cable set-up. Smaller rims will not and require offset trailing arms. The next thing you start hitting is the end of the spring.  Depending on the wheel size and how low the car is, the spring may go inside the rim, but it depends on a few things and the car needs to be sitting fairly high to make it happen. The other option is a shorter spring which keeps the ends further away from the tyre.

So taking into account the comments above

front
17x8 or 18x8 with a 4"  backspace possible wheel arch lip issues due to squarer corners of modern tires...not a big issue
rear
18x8 with a 4" backspace no issues at all
18x9.5 with a 5.5" backspace sits flush with the existing rim for outside and 1.5" closer to the trailing arm on the inside....will require handbrake bracket and cable to be moved and will be very close to arm.
18x9.5 with a 5.0" backspace sits 1/2" further out than original and 1" further in and probably still needs handbrake fix.

I think any wheel that is wider in the inside will need the handbrake line moved.  It sticks out a lot.

The US forums are the best to check as they have more people doing diffeerent things than here.

Hi All,
After all that i have decided to keep my original 15" rims and put 245x60x15 front and 255x60x15 rear.
Does any one have this or do you know if these sizes will fit my stock 71 ?
All feedback is muchly appreciated.
Have a great day :shades:

I know you have decided but here is a picture of mine now i have swapped the wheels

18*8 all round

245/45/18 front
255/45/18 back

I will lower it a bit more but overall very happy with it.

Ride seems great, no real deterioration going from 15-18.

Well mine are 255 on the rear and its still just an 8" rim so I dont see why not for 15"s.

Hi Craigh,

My car is Black and looks great, but i have to give credit were it is due and you car looks VERY nice in Blue.

Cool thanks for that. buying things that you have no idea can make it hard, if not stressful.

There is nothing worst than trying to return a product.
thanks again much appreciated.

Thanks for that.

I never considered blue when I started looking but when i saw it in the flesh the Bridghampton blue really popped.

It seems to compliment the chrome and polished steel as they have  a blue silver look in different lights.

I agree re buying before seeing, was like that with the wheels, lots of pictures help but seeing them up close or on your car is different.

You get buyers remorse as soon as you order them then hope they are ok. :-)

Do you have pictures of yours posted. ?
