The ‘72 came standard with 15 x 8 rims. That should fit in the spare tyre compartment. Is there a particular reason why you want a skinny spare?
It's C3 chromie for me, see? Si!

Yep, that could be a squeeze! ;-)

Do Holden wheels fit Vette stud patterns?

I've heard that HQ-WB stud pattern is the same.

That is a very common stud pattern so you'd be able to get a wide range of slimline wheels from any mag place and check to see if they fit.

the hq rims fit BUT they lock on to the brake calipers and do not turn:23

Not sure what C3s come with for a spare, but C4s come with a space saver.  Maybe you could test fit a C4 space saver wheel to see if it works.  Stud pattern is the same, offset is different but wont make a difference on such a narrow wheel.  As long as it doesn't touch the calipers, you'll be OK.

Otherwise, Commodore wheels can be bolted on (not sure about brake clearance though) in an emergency but are not ideal.  Commodore stud pattern is 5/120, Chev is 5/120.6 (or 5/4.75") so use a Commodore rim only as a last resort.

Mid C3s came with a 15x8 steel spare—even those post-76 that chose the alloy option.

Stud pattern is the same as a Holden but the brake calipre will stop you from doing up the studs properly on a standard wheel (I tried to use a standard Holden wheel when I had a flat.. no luck).

I guess you'll need to experiment.

Cheers

I wonder if you'd be able to use a holden cheese cutter (real slim) - you could fit one of those anywhere.

Then maybe to get around the brake issue, simply put whastever wheel you decide on it back to front for clearance?

Remember this is only planned for temp/emergency use and not permanent?

Just throwing some ideas around for comment.

Im in awe guys thanks for all your comments, it helped me decide not to buy a 15x6 and look into spacesaver holden or corvette.

Thanks

From memory; 78s to 82s came with a space saver tyre, so if you can buy one of them you'd be set.

or maybe do as buddy did with his 73...he has fitted FORD rims to it using adaptors....that way you could buy a skinny rim and just carry the adaptor....hey how about just paying a little bit extra and buying a mag wheel? something like a very skinny centreline?you used to see them down to 3 or 4 inchs on some mean ass pro street cars. it may never get used but its handy if you do have one.i was always led to believe that the holden stud pattern was slightly different....(.2mm i think) was also so told the holden  rim WILL fit,but that .2mm puts strain on  the studs...thats my 2 cents worth.

And dont forget to make sure when the spare is fitted that it is equal diameter to the other tyre otherwise you will ruin your positraction!
Are you going to put the spare under the tank?

Here's another thought: A mate of mine is building a rat rod and at the moment it has Chevy wheels attached to a Jaguar XJS front end, so presumably Jag wheels would fit the Chev stud pattern -- dunno about offsets.

Or, as suggested by someone I know, they/you could/can have taken/take an old Vette wheel, had/have the rim removed from the center and a new rim of the correct width put back on.
