This 94 coupe has come back on carsales and I'd like your advice & 2c on it.

I havent talked to the chap yet but it seems to be a private import but he hasnt converted it and trying to sell it asis.  Now its not too clear on DOTARS if you can register a private import as LHD and keep it LHD.  As Im from WA Im wondering if I could get it regsitered as is because it was brought in as private import.  Would be a cheap coupe if that was possible.

To the best of my knowledge your best hope would be to try register as LHD it in WA.  If you want to use it in a state other than those two states I'd be very careful as it isn't technically legal to do so and will likely be a matter of the time before you get pulled over for out of state rego.

Before you commit to anything I'd advise you get confirmation firsthand.

I'm sure there are others on this board with better knowledge than myself on this subject. ;42

Hello Waks,

Its a great price and i even looked at this sale too. I was even looking into importing in a 95 or 96 LT4 from the states and then converting it to RHD.

It appears that this car is only registerble (if theres such a word) in other states than ours and and you definitely need to have it converted, though theres one major hurdle.. there isnt anyone who can do this model.

Ok thanks, I must of heard wrong as I thought that if a car was brought in under private import scheme, then the car can be registered and remain LHD.

Its a shame late model C4's are hard to come by in original condition... looks like its back to C5 hunting.

Can't you still register it as LHD in Perth Waks?

I know of at least two C4 Vettes that were fully registered in WA while still LHD.

Im pretty sure its 1989 & older you can register LHD.. well I think its that.

For a $30K 94, I'd call the RTA in your state to find out for sure, it looks like a good car based on the ad. ;42

Waks, being a personal import means you don't need a RAWS certified workshop to do the RHD conversion.

The idea behind personal import laws is someone moving to Australia can bring their car with them and have it converted easier (less regulation) than a commercial importer who's trying to make a profit by importing cars and re-selling them.

I always assumed (but I could be wrong) that the private importer HAD to get the car converted and registered before being able to sell it.  You should look into whether it's possible for you to buy a LHD private import and still have it converted by a non RAWS converter.

I know, in Victoria, Corvette Clinic still convert 90-96 C4 private imports, so it may be worth contacting them to see if it's do-able.
