tyres rubbing inner gaurds
« on: October 19, 2006, 11:39:31 PM »
went for a drive in mates 69 L71,427/435hp vette today, after doing a bit of welding on it for him.he was having a bit of trouble when turning full lock.the tyres were rubbing inner gaurds.found out that a piece of angle welded to lower wishbones both sides, that acts as a stop for the steering arm was badly worn away.
im a pressure vessel welder by trade so i got the job.pad welded em up and all is sweet.i mentioned to him that they didnt look like a stock item.very rough welding, different from left to right, but other mate gus with an 80 vette also has same brackets, also terrible welding.so if you are having trouble with tyres rubbing inner gaurds, break out the welder.
we had a beer,a chat and an ohhhhhh baby blast around the block.

The welding on all C3's tends to be a bit ordinary IMHO.

Hi all
Do you mean tyres rubbing on chassis rail or inner guards
If it is rubbing on chassis rail then yes it is common to have to weld up the lock stops just enough for the tyres to clear the chassis rail by 4 or 5 mm
If the tyres are rubbing on the inner guards, then that is caused by one of two things
1/ Non factory wheel fitted
2/ Inner guards fitted incorrectly
The inner guard rubbing problem can be easily rectified by cutting the inner guard away from the outer guard carefully and reattaching it back further to enable clearance of the wheel.;42

bit or both, right wheel rubs chassis, left wheel only inner gaurds.but prob fixed.it a real nice car,but does need a few thing doing.mechanically its great, interior needs a spruce, body is straight, but has a hole in rear spoiler.(transporting from usa)the pics were taken with my camera phone.i will get better pics when he cleans the damn thing.he has had the car for 5 yrs or so ,bought from joes golden gasolines in south oz.joes always has vettes in,mostly chrome bumper c3's.steve paid 35k for it.he thinks he paid a bit much,i said maybe for a 427/390..... but for a 427/435 i think he got a bargain...now 69dr...will this make the RAT PACK?
