Author Topic: Brakes. Need new calipers or rebuilds (Read 13606 times)

Hi guys. As I suspected, when I hooked up the new brake system the old callipers started to weep.

So what do you guys recommended?. I can either get the old ones rebuilt. Any suggestions on who to do the work? OR
Buy new callipers. I Like the idea of stainless pistons etc. You know, some high quality/performance gear.

Any serious input here would be greatly appreciated.

I had my fronts rebuilt thru Classic Chev. their guy machines them and fits stainless sleeves, as most brake shops can do, but also loctites the sleeves in and when assembled, and then pressure tests them to ensure there is no weeping between the casting and the sleeve. good peace of mind IMHO. Pretty expensive though... think i paid around $800...:b4

Forgot to add for that $ were new seals of course and, due to pitting corrosion, all new pistons. Like i said, prob not the cheapest but peace of mind none the less.:b2

Expensive litte suckers. About RRP of 1500 US Dollars for all four wheels, 2 kits. I'm waiting on a reply from them to see if they have an agent in Australia. [kit includes all that is shown in the picture]

This is the type of thing I'm after.

Having said that. How long ago did you get yours done and did you have any trouble bleeding them. [You know the old problem of air being sucked back in past the seals]

get the aluminium ones! and get some bigger/better rotors too! Thats what I'll be doing (oops I let it slip!). I'm hoping to get 14 inch rotors Front 13in back. But you can get some great rotors in 12 inch + the aluminium calipers combo's...youll stop on a dime! Big money but it'll put you in the 21st century! But the cheapest way is to stainless re-sleeve.But again you have to make sure that there is holes around the sleeves,otherwise its useless putting new sleeves in...cause theyll still leak!

Just had a quick read of the catalogue they have new replacement calipers for $469.95 US for a set of 4 or heavy duty delco for $559.95 US a set.

Prob about 6 months ago Cam. Heard that they can be tricky to bleed but i didn't have any probs. Only thing was trapped air using gravity bleeding but nothing a bit of patience couldn't solve. Never had probs of air being sucked back thru the seals, especially with the rebuilt calipers with new seals. Still trying to justify the cost of a pressure bleeder to myself though... Would make life a bit easier (but for around $400 for a pressurising {hand pump or compressor} canister type)... :b4

Yeah I just checked it out. Many thanks. They sure do have some gear but I'm mainly after some high performance gear.

Now those sound like the go! Works out similar money and they are totally brand new. Better choice for sure.

Andy, If you go bigger rotors, then your going bigger wheels, yes/no?

I used speed bleeders on the calipers today and bleed all four from empty in an hour or so just by pumping the brake pedal.

Yeah I agree. If I can I would like to go Aluminium/stainless. See what I find and how much.

Anybody know of Aussie makers or importers of aluminium calipers?

You could try Hoppers Stoppers. I have their DBA/PBR twin piston upgrade on the front of my car.

Otherwise if you want something a little more exotic try Cebco who are agents for Brembo and AP Racing. I don't know if they have any Corvette specific packages though.

Want I meant was, "To go to bigger dia. rotors you need bigger wheels?"

I want to stick with my standard wheels for the moment. I am looking at better rotors but I was under the impression I can't go to much bigger rotors without going to larger wheels?

I'm sure there would be others who, unlike me, would definitely know, but assuming yours has the same wheels as mine i've heard what you have- our standard calipers fill our standard wheels with not much room to spare. i haven't measured them but am sure a quick comparison between the wheel inner dia and the distance from the axle/stub axle to the outermost part of the caliper will give you your clearance ;40

Yeah I'm sure but I thought I would ask just incase I missed out on something new. If you read the article I posted the link to earlier you can see that the new calipers just fit with the new 12" rotors.
