Tyre query - not really tech enough to go in tech
« on: May 15, 2005, 05:56:13 PM »
Simple query, should I trust you average tyre place (say tyre power for example) to know how to life my car change the tyres and not screw up anything on the IRS?

Or should I only buy tyres from them if it's cheaper and take them to someone who really knows Vette (down here GoTech would be the obvious choice)

I know it sounds dumb, but I just don't know whether to trust those places with my car...

Put it this way: I take my rims down to the tyre shop in my daily driver, get the tyres mounted while I watch them while they mount the tyres (despite this I have already had a prybar put through one of my wheel sensors ;30), take them home and mount them myself.

When I first had my car I realised the rattle guns these tyre places use do not work well with GM lug nuts & studs after having to replace about four seperate studs & nuts.  Now I torque them up to spec with a torque wrench.

Too much chance of someone with no idea putting a jack under a fuel or brake line, fibreglass leaf spring or (god forbid) your fibreglass floor).  Personally after some of the things I have seen I prefer to do as much as I can myself.

Also, if you don't already know - have them put your wheel weights on the inside of the rim - it looks better ;ay and less change of scuffing up the edge of your rim.

This is another one of those jobs you will have to watch most places do, most forget about not using weights on the outside right after you ask them.

If you do take your car in, remove the plastic wheel nut covers yourself.  My covers have plier marks all over them because I didn't do it once.
