Left hand drive laws in NSW & Bathurst inquiry
« on: January 28, 2017, 10:03:55 PM »
Hi crew, I'm new here from WA. Had a few questions.
I want to drive my left hand drive C4 (1988) to the V8's at Bathurst this October and wondered about laws driving it through SA (fairly sure not allowed LHD there) and into NSW. Do I need a permit in NSW or is it legal as it is here in WA?
If I need a permit do any of you know the process getting one for travel in NSW? (I'll probably sneak through SA, too much effort for a few hours travel through the north of that silly state...😁)

Also does this club do any runs over the Bathurst weekend and if so is there any chance of joining any of these runs to parade drivers (mine is the coupe, not convertible) or even just to tag along & get involved and meet some other Corvette owners & have a beer or 2??
I've never been on any forum ever so sorry if I'm in the wrong place for this.
Can anyone help out? Just want to do the Nullabour & watch the V8's at minimum but if anyone can help with accomodation in Bathurst over that weekend or anything else it'd be very much appreciated.
Thanks very a lot, 😏

Plenty of legally registered left hand drive vehicles on the road in NSW. Current and valid rego in your home state is all that is required.
It's C3 chromie for me, see? Si!

As long as it is registered, SA will be no problem either. plenty of LHD cars there too.

You can drive your registered LHD car anywhere in Aus. without a problem.

I don't know where you're getting your information from.

S.A. has the toughest laws regarding registration.  If you want to register a LHD car in S.A. the car has to be stock, their RTA (it goes by the name of Regal or Royale or something; possibly due to the metric system, lol) won't even pass a LHD for rego if it has a modern stereo; it has to be bog stock. If you want to modify a LHD car there, big brakes, etc. you can but you also have to convert it to RHD.

If aren't going to live in S.A. you don't have to worry about registering your car there, you just drive through with your NSW or WA plates.

The latest news is that S.A. is reviewing their registration for LHD to make it more inline with the other states.

Slightly off topic.
Since our current transport minister today was given the flick {Gray}
Maybe the next minister can clean up this awfull mess regarding
our car hobby. why is it different and better in Victoria
and WA than here .HE was stubborn and hopefully clubs will push for national unity
and equality.Little Victoria leads the way  for the car enthusiast.

I can drive my registered car anywhere in Australia
but if you lived in NSW currently you cant full register a 1988 LHD corvette here till 2018 just a joke...cheers

Thanks guys, so going on what's been said, I'm assuming my full registered LHD 1988 is fine to drive from WA, through SA, and into NSW for the week and return with no problem.

How about any runs you guys do on Bathurst weekend or around that time??
Or is it politics and red tape in your own club? Too secret to share? Just want to be social 🍻😁

Hi Unsafec4 don't quote me on this but we have organized runs to Bathurst in the past to take the drivers around but the last two years they have used Mustangs and Cobras . Last year we did take the drivers on the street parade on the Friday ( convertibles only ) The committee hasn't set out the runs for October as yet ao ill keep you informed .Ray

If you make it to Sydney there's some coffee meets, mystery cruises, etc. (not Corvette specific) it just depends on which weekend(s) you're here.

Cheers fellas, that would be great to know if anything is up. I'll keep my eye out on here too. Would certainly consider going to Sydney for a look then cruise to Bathurst from there. Thanks

First and second weekend of the month tends to be when stuff is on.

Hi unsafeC4,
Instead of Bathurst why not come for the Nationals in Easter, there will be alot more Corvettes, and Corvette minded people, and I am sure atleast a Beer or 2. You will still get to have a good drive of your C4and make some lasting vettefriends. Just thought I'd plant the seed.  Jeff

I've never been to the Bathurst races but where does one park their car while the races are on? I don't want to put you off going if that's your dream but I wouldn't trust my car in any large car park especially out of eye-shot but maybe that's just me, lol.

Unsafe C4...Just checking Bathurst for October virtually sold out, min 5days 3K
You need to book as you leave for next year
You might try Oberon 40 min trip to Bathurst need to book now!! how long stay etc
even Lithgow maybe some BnB places in Bathurst............. do your search.
Its an expensive weekend everyone cashes in on the event $$$$
At the track You might sleep up on the mountain on the ground small tent at your risk as my friend does.
you'll feel a grub but its worth every inconvenience........hago
