New fella..advice required.
« on: September 06, 2015, 07:16:36 PM »
Hi all.  Peter is the name.  Been around V8's and fast cars all my life.  Not brand specific..I love em all.  Currently drive a SSV and have had clubsports and all sorts of cars before.  Dream car is a AC Cobra replica and have been searching for years and years.  Problem is the finances have always pulled up a little short of the asking prices.

Always loved Vettes and by chance stumbled across one in country Victoria.  1988 C4 LHD.  Immaculate, and I think a pretty good price.  Apparently the rule in Vic is 30 years for LHD compliant, but I think its 25 years in NSW meaning a few years short.  So a few questions.

1.  Am I right so far?
2.  If I buy the car now and track day it or similar, until 2018, can I register it LHD then?
3.  I have parents in Victoria,  I guess they could buy the car, rego it then transfer to me in 2018?
4.  Is there anyway around the LHD issue by way of Car Club rego in NSW?
5   Is there a need for RHD down the track?   Are people happy to drive once a week LHD

Any other information greatly appreciated...sorry for dumb newby questions.

I'm happy to drive LHD every day of the week.

The only issue for me is when exiting a curved road that hooks left and having to merge; depending on your car, the C pillar (behind passenger's head) may present a blind spot. Overtaking a large vehicle has risks as you have to pull out further but it's not really a problem if you wait until it's clear. Another gripe I've heard: ordering drive thru on your own.

Sorry I can't help with the other questions.

Cheers, thanks for your reply...I always anticipated the drive through issue and overtaking issue, but didn't think of the merge.  I guess I wont be short of passengers to assist!    Just got to get over these rego issues.

Yep, if you have a passenger just ask them if it's clear to merge or slow right down and move your neck about like a fast pacing pigeon.

NSW club rego is 30 years Vic club rego is 25  I believe.  You wouldnt be the first person to have an interstate mailing address to get around that problem or to get cheaper rego

In my experience, when the passenger screams it is usually not safe to overtake!

I've got used to the LHD very quickly, my biggest annoyance is the security gates at work - I have to get out and walk around the car to swipe my card!

If you went with point 3 above, I guess you'd be up for Stamp Duty twice.

Unless the regulations have changed, I believe a NSW registered vehicle has to be 30 years old or more to be able to remain left hook.
It's C3 chromie for me, see? Si!
