Play from pitman arm
« on: April 16, 2008, 08:49:21 AM »
G'day all

Sorry, if this is a simple question, I am only just starting to find my way around my 75.

I have been knocked back at rego for "remove excess play from pitman arm," among other things. Before I crawl under there, is there a straight forward way of fixing the problem?

Cheers
Brian

Hi humphbri:x
First thing we need to know is your Corvette left or right hand drive.
If right hand drive what steering box are you using. If you do not know what type of steering box you have post a picture of it, and then we can help you:20

Hi humphbri:b2
You can rectify the play by one of two ways
1/ Buy a control valve joint service kit
2/ Replace the control valve assembly
I always replace the complete assembly as the control valve is probably worn and leaking oil anyway
The control valve is the part on the end of the drag link (relay rod) and bolts to the steering box pitman arm
I assume that the inspector wasn't talking about simple freeplay in the steering box?;mmm

Thank
I have no idea what the friendly inspector (not!) was doing. He made me stay in the car. He jiggled the steering wheel and said that I needed to 'remove the freeplay from the pitman arm.'

Hmmmmmm what can one say here. If he is any good he would have at least shown you so you know what was needed.;50
You really do not need someone to jiggle the steering wheel to inspect for freeplay either;30

Thanks Chromie

Hint for newbies like me: don't get p#issed off at the rego inspectors; they don't like it.

Suggest you simply ring the bloke who knocked it back and ask him to be more specific so that you can address the problem properly.
It's C3 chromie for me, see? Si!
