tire sizes for 15 x 10's
« on: June 21, 2005, 07:40:42 PM »
Has anyone out there got 15 x 10 & 15 x 8 wheels on their vette. Im organising some wheels at the moment and I want to get tyres at the same time. What sizes do you guys recommend.

Thanks

What year is yours Mick? My C3 has standard 15" wheels with 255s all 'round.

Ive got a 1972 which I had just had flares installed on, to make enough room for 10 inch's at the back.

Any advice 69 Dirty Rat?? (with monster wheels coming from the states i'm sure you would have a more accurate idea than me). All i can say is 255s fit well and on 10" rims you prob wouldn't want to go wider than 265s (learned from previous SS Torana trial and error...)

I had 295s on 11" rims on my old GT Falcon and there was no concern of them being too big for the wheel. I fully intend to fit 295s to some 10" rims and mount them to my vette as well.

The more i think about it back in my p plate days alot of my mates had SS and SLR5000 Torrys with bolt-on flares and 1tonners all with 10" wheels at the back and all ran 265s. and if you add an inch to both wheel and tyre it works out similar  Brutus' 11"/295s. Best thing to do would be to call up a tyre place and ask whats the biggest they will fit to a 10" rim. And if 295s fit on 10" rims then they will certainly look FAT! :22

Sound huge hey, I hope it will fit and work keeping to the right circumference required. im getting wheel's from wheelboys in Melbourne and they can organise tyres for me as well, gunna get Goodrich TA's with raiased white lettering (old school) They asked what I wanted.

I just hoped someone who actually drive a vette with these size wheels could tell me from there own experiences what work for them.

Check my wheel's out below, Closest I can find to slots without hassles. I like em anyway

Those tyres look great on '60s and '70s cars, they also suit their suspension technology well.

Love Hopsters! Billet Specialties have the original Hopster for US$189 each for 15x10s. I'm sure there are plenty of other brands who make the same. What brand are they from Melbourne? I always ran those BF Goodrich tyres too and whats good about them is if you get tired of the white lettering, just turn 'em around!:)

NICE! I'm looking at wheels at the moment and its a tough choice between American racing, Billet Specialties, Boyd Coddington and a link 69 Dirty Rat showed me; Show wheels. A mate works for Bob Jane Tmarts and says they can get American Racing aswell- and says they are top shelf stuff.
Just checked my bookmarked wheel sites and i actually meant American Racing have the Hopsters, not Billet Specialties;mmm

295's should fit easily on your 10's (I know guys that have 275's on 8in!), thats what I would go for! BUT dont forget to check and measure your back spacing from your standard wheels and tell the Rim guys so that the tyres dont rub on the trail arm and park brake Cable. You dont want them guessing, ask them if they know what the backspace for the C3 vett is or get them to measure it, that way its there fault if its wrong!!! Its probably on the web somewhere anyway?  *this is important before ordering custom wheels!!!. Also ask for the SOFT LIP it looks better than step lip! It looks FATTER
What series profile tyre will you go? 50 series should do it,otherwise you'll have to jack the back up! 255/60/15 are 27in tall, 295/50/15 are 26.6in tall and 295/60/15 are 28.9in tall so it would look silly!
I bought Offset trailarms to get the extra width! (12 inch wide RIMS) and asked somebody with similar wheels in the US what there back space was!
Good Luck

one thing you may need to consider when fitting larger rear wheels of more than 10% above stock size is to fit offset trailing arms.

Actually, according to the owners manual on my 77, the original Tire on the vette was a GR70-15.  Bit like a truck tire.  Most vette owners these days drop to a 60 profile tyre.

Hey Tippa,  with the 255's do you not find that they scrape on the inner back of the front guard on full lock?  I originally had 255's but drop back to a 245's to stop this.

Cam, my old '77 had 255's with room on the back.  They only rubbed the ft sway bar slightly on full lock.
