1967 C@ speedomer problem
« on: October 09, 2016, 06:56:47 PM »
Details of my Corvette below explaining my cry for HELP

1967, 427 Big Block, 4 speed Muncie.
After having no trouble with the speedo a couple of weeks ago it just stopped. No noises etc.
Bought a new inner/outer cable from Qld, paid mechanic to fit and when I picked it up all good til about 35 - 40 mph then a tick, tick, tick, tick followed by continuous loud screeching noises while the speedo needle went beserk bouncing up n down from 50 to 100/120 etc. BIZARRE
So back to workshop, took mechanic for drive, all smooth til 35mph then as accelerating same expensive bloody noises emanated from the speedo area.
Disconnected the cable from behind the speedo, NO noises from the cable.

I am assuming it is not as simple as lubrication but will attempt that first

Guess this is going to be expensive and a problem, if it is the speedo head.

My question is:
I am not a mechanic and living in Coffs limits any mechanics that have worked on Corvettes.

I have done a lot of reading on the forum and I must say it frightens me.

1. If the speedo has to be removed from cluster can anyone in the club recommend a specialist in this field to have it repaired. Probably would be Sydney or Brisbane I guess, or do I have to send it to the states???(God forbid)
I have no idea what parts would need to be ordered to fix this.
My odometer has not worked since I got the Stingray so that would have to be fixed as well.

PLEASE, any advise or help would be much appreciated as to what may be the trouble and who can fix it?.
Any ph numbers or email addresses of someone who can help.

I look forward to you passing this on to appropriate members of the club who may help a fellow C2 owner.

Thanks in advance.

They are a simple device , a couple of worm drives , the first worm would carry the magnetic drive, that drives the speedo needle.
The problem will be one of the worms most likely.
If your mechanically minded pull it apart .
If not try    Namiiss in Newcastle you will have to remove it or get it removed .

Tony, you may like to try "Attspeed Instruments" in Glossip St, St'Mary's. They also make to meaure, speedo cables, g'box to cruise cables and do repairs on all ages of auto instruments and auto clocks. Most likely you will need to talk to them. Good luck.

I have used Roger before work is first class and does not and I will state that again does not over change on the repair or on the postage.
Get it done properly and no more problems.

New repo speedos arent expensive. Its a couple of hours work max to replace it. Off course you may want to keep the original considering its a big block car.
Alternatively you might decide its all too hard and sell the car to me when I finally get paid out for mine.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Can you recommend where I would buy a repo speedo for the 67. Do I have to get from America or is there somewhere in Oz I can buy one.
Would certainly keep the original as the Sting Ray is authentic. Cheers & thanks

Ringwood Speedo in Melbourne fixed my 68 BB speedo, took some time for them to get parts but the result was good. 67 should be the same internally. putting in a repop will not match as the paint is new.
