Title: number plate size
Post by: cam454 on February 25, 2010, 09:21:11 PM
Does anyone know if there are any companies that can custom make number plates. As many of you know a standard plate doesn't fit between the bumpers on a 71. I realise that this is against the law but it is an avenue I wish to explore. Any help would be great. Thanx

How about Bi Centenary plates? They're exactly the same size as US plates.

I don't think you can get NSW Bicentenary plates now:

http://www.myplates.com.au/products_pricing.html

There are lots of companies in the USA that make "novelty" plates to order. Just Google "custom license plates".

You pays your money, and you takes your chances.

I had to cut the edges off my plates on my 76 - then I bought 5 digit plate covers and trimmed the edge just enough it would fit in the bumper.

No-one would have ever known.

The way to get Bi Centenary Plates is to buy a car that has them on (typically a '87 or so model) put normal plates on that car, sell it, then transfer the plates to your 'Vette. I did that and made a profit along the way.

Try this mob http://www.licenseplates.tv/ I got mine made up a few years back and nobody has spotted the difference! You email them with a picture/description of your plates and ask them to make it in the US size! I've sent many guys there, they look real. They cost around $200 (??? years ago) including the delivery from the US. Email them and ask any questions, they will reply!

Capital Signs in the ACT will make "Show Plates" for you in plastic.

My 71 has a set for show :-)

We went with a size that is US width but half way between US and full size Oz for back, and US width and normal OZ height for front.

May be worth a call.

Regards

Craig

depending on your preference for number plate characters, my 69 has black and white nsw plates with 2 letters and 3 numbers that fit perfectly between my bumpers. i just needed to find the most helpful person at the rta and i came out with the plates to suit

I reckon you could argue the toss it is illegal to bend or cut a No plate they are happy to take your money for rego but they cant supply you with a plate that suits your car without an additional charge

Yes; $200 upfront and $90 a year as they are personalised only. All the good combinations are gone that make it even half desirable to pay this.

Went with the $85-ish black on white slimline. Front plate slides behind the bumper up front and displays enough to make it semi-legal. At the back the new plate is now a W-wave shape until I can be bothered pulling out the drill for some new holes and trimming the edges.
