Title: New Vette
Post by: demonx on July 14, 2008, 04:16:31 PM
Most of you guys that I speak to probably already know this is a delayed post - but I thought I'd finally announce my new car:

1970 Roadster 350ci/350hp
4 speed muncie with hurst
18" Torq Thrust II wearing Bridgestone 245/45/18
Hooker side pipes (sitting there ready for after I get it on the road!)

Overall its "ok" but needs a lot of work. All the usual vacuum issues and everyting else needs to be lubed up so it moves like it once did. Needs a new starter motor and a few other minor issues.

Interior will be totally replaced over time so if anyones looking for some "ok" and some "good" condition interior stuff put your name down!

I've already removed the luggage rack - Anyone want one?

I'm in the process of redoing the complete suspension and brakes. Pretty much everything under the car is getting done or replaced. Should drive better than it looks.

I've got original style mirrors sitting there to replace these uglies - bu it's been painted around the huge mirrow mounts. So I have to wait till it gets painted to install the new mirrors! I'm considering a respray in Ferrari red!

At the moment it's loud as a mofo as there is no mufflers, only a couple of large hotdogs in the rear! I'm guessing I wouldn't get far before being pulled over!

Heres a couple of mobile phone pics.

I can't complain. I'm only 30 and I'm on my second Corvette.

If you had have said that to me in my early 20's I'd have thought you insane!

Yes.

They are American Racing Torq Thrust II

18X8 all round.

That size is not available off the shelf - they were custom order and took about a month to be made.

I reckon they are too good for the car! Now I need paint to even things out!

Congrats on the new car.  It will look awesome once the side pipes are fitted.
It's a bit hard to see, but the interior doesn't look too bad in that photo.

It's a mobile phone pic - hides all the ugly stuff!

Can't wait to get the side pipes on but probably won't be on the road till either late in the year or next year. Side pipes won't be on till after the cars on the road!  I'm a bit on the povo side right now!

Only 18x8 all around?  Surely with the wait to get them made and since you are re-doing the rear suspension you could have upeed it to 18x10's on the rear :evil just to add a bit of attitude to the car ;46  I can't wait until  I'm up [ to the wheel ordering stage for mine.  TT2's may be common on vettes, but they look so good.

I'm not sure how many guys up north are driving around on TT2's, but I'm the only one I've seen in Vic with any (I'm sure someone has them, I just haven't seen them)

In the USA however they are dime a dozen.

is there a law against going to the 18's in nsw? in south oz we can only go up 2 inchs more than standard....so if that vette was here it could only run 17's

I'm pretty sure that's an Australia wide law.

...unless you get an engineers certificate.

I thought thats it 2in wider not taller, because the diameter of the wheel doesnt change much! BUT technically I think you are supposed to get an engineers cert if you change the wheels anything from standard. I was lucky, I found a document stating that 1 vette, yes 1 vette came out with 10 1/2 inch wheel back in 69, so add 2 inches and I could put a 12in wheel on the back! Again, this is all documented in my engineers certificate.

From what I can work out:

The overall tyre diameter can't change by more than 15mm, and the maximum rim diameter can't be more than 2 inches greater than stock, which is 17's for a vette.  I think a lot of people break this law though. In Qld you can't get rims engineered so you just have to bank on not getting picked up...

Still 18's look very nice and I'm keen to get a set similar to demonx's on my 73 ;-)

I got mine from texas. Good price too. from memory they were about US$1300 Shipping was US$500 ish though and then I got stung with $640 tax when they landed cause the tire place didn't follow my request for sending them in two separate shipments.

17x8 I was quoted just over US$900 except I reckon the 18" looks so much better than the 17". Especially once I put them on the car I knew I made the right choice and the extra cash was worth it!

TIRES are the f'n expensive part. More than the wheels. You can expect to pay $400 - $600 each for decent  245/45/18 tires. Mine are Bridgestone S03 pole positions.
