Title: Wheel repair
Post by: Shane Finn on January 10, 2008, 07:15:43 AM
I got run off the road yesterday by some idiot who didn't check when he changed lanes (I was out of his blind spot) and have damaged the outer lips of my two left side chrome wheels when I had to drive over a gutter to avoid a side swipe

Any recommendation for a wheel repairer than can also re-chrome?

The only wheel repairer I know of is Ozwheel out in Lepptington.  It's a very low key operation but I'll dig up their number.

I have a feeling getting an 18" rim chromed here in Oz may be an issue though...

Try Morton and May at liverpool (hoxton park rd) Ph.96017000, I know they do chroming. I used to work at Circle Track Racing Wheels at Seven Hills making wheels and repairing them but they dont do chrome work only repairs.I have had a set of wheels made at Morton and May 20 years ago and the quality was great.I trust their work.The other place I can suggest is Neale Wheels at Gould st Sth Strathfield,I dont know the ph. no. but they are in the yellow pages.

To repair a chrome wheel all the chrome needs to be stripped off, then the wheel is repaired after which the wheel is again rechromed. An expensive exercise.

I would suggest having the work quoted and compare it to buying a new set of wheels.
The price of new wheels are getting ridiculously cheep nowadays.

Just an example;

In my opinion no one in OZ can do chrome like the US! Can you claim on insurance and get a new set sent over? Did you get there license plate?

Licence plate - no we both just kept driving (though I was swearing as well). I didn't notice the damage until I got home.

I have found one restorer in SA (www.aclassmetal.com.au) that can both repair wheels and re-chrome most types of alloy wheels up to and including at least 18in. They may go bigger but I didn't ask.

I was quoted $320 ea+GST. ;30

I spoke to Morton and May and they advise that having extensively enquired around the industry no-one else does alloy chroming and that until recently neither did A Class Metal and that they didn't know that A Class now chromed alloy. Apparently M&M turn away about 40 enquiries a week for re-chroming alloy wheels.

It sounds expensive but is actually cheap! I had one of my wheels repaired and polished for $300! So to get it chromed as well...its not to bad!

I am trying to find a sensible way of safely transporting the rims to Adelaide. I will be contacting some of the tyre retailers tomorrow to see how they transport rims and if they have any packaging I can buy/steal. I'll also ring around some of the freight companies to see if they have standard packaging that might work.

Anyone here have ideas?
