Has any body had extractors / headers fitted to their C4. Just would like to know of any OZ companys make headers to fit right hand drive C4's. Or do I have to get a set made up, just got a price today, $1,200 to make a set up from scratch and fit them, is this okay?
-
About $800 is the norm up here. For $1200 I would want mandrel bent!
My system cost $1600 right through to the exhaust tips (no cats) and the headers are HPC coated.
I don't think anyone has them off the shelf.
-
i got a set of brand new hooker headers of the U.S ebay landed to my door for $300 aus. and fitted for $200. brilliant fit great result that my exhaust man said he would have charged me $1400 to get the same quality.
-
Are you still lefthand drive ? I thought the steering conversion prevents US headers from fitting?
I believe someone in Brisbane has now made a jig to make RHD headers but the cost is up around $1000

There is one company in Australia that makes off the shelf headers for C4's that I know of (I think it was Hurricane Headers..). If you call Tuffy Mufflers in Waterloo they will be able to advise you (they told me about the locally available pipes when I had my headers made). What particular conversion of car these fit I don't know. I was told a price of $900 for these locally made headers a little over two years ago when I was getting quotes for my headers.
Whether the $1200 price is good depends. I assume that is for uncoated mild steel pipes with press bends?
My headers cost me $1750 - these were ceramic coated (about $300 worth of value) and are mandrel bent with flanged collectors. I'm very happy with what I got for my money.
Check the work of who is doing the work if you get some made up - for one thing you don't want your collectors to hang too low so they get cleaned up by the first bump in the road. Make sure who does it is going to package it well if you go custom. (So your spark plug access isn't too badly effected for instance).
I would recommend either ceramic coating or heat wrapping too just to keep your underhood temps reasonable and to ensure all the plastic connectors and the like in your engine bay live a little longer rather than going brittle and breaking over time from heat exposure.

BTW white88 - your car sounded pretty nice when you took off from Robertson last Sunday. ;27

When I had a set of US headers test fitted on my car they hung so low it wasn't funny. They hung below the floorpan. :b4
I wouldn't import headers again because it is basically a gamble whether they will fit.

i think it would depend on the style of convertion, but these fitted really well.my car is RHD but they seem to be a really good quality header as i have seen them for sale for around $400 US. i think i was lucky getting them for the price i did,but in saying that i have got alot of performance parts of ebay and if you do your research properly it can make things that would not normally be affordable now achiveable.

CES Racing Systems in Bris has a jig to make them so you won't have to surrender your car for weeks on end.

great job done on them.what kind dollars do they want for them?
-
Don't remeber exactly, somewhere around the $1000 mark..
They are a nice piece, all tig welded mandrel bends etc...
-
Those look great ben, any photos of them fitted to your car?
-
Interesting how they didn't merge the pipes until right at the collector instead of using the conventional "4 into 1" setup.

Ummm, maybe, I'll have a look....

They commonly call that a tri-y design. It is meant to be better for mid range torque where a 4 into 1 is meant to be better for higher rpm horsepower.
Ben, did you notice much of an increase in power/torque after fitting those?

I know - I was just commenting as I really haven't seen them offered for our cars. Every other type of header I recall having seen is 4 into 1 style.
-
I agree, Hooker, Hedmen and TPIS are all 4 into 1 type. Never seen Tri-y for a C4 before.

...Ben, did you notice much of an increase in power/torque after fitting those?
It was mostly due to the new 383 they were attached to! :evil ;39

Pacemaker make then for C4s ,both mirror and chain drive conversion
Part # 5300 /5301 (1 +3/4 only (1+5/8 special order)
Any exhaust shop should be able to order them.
Approx $800 but a dealer on eBay was doing them for $550 earlier this year.
Conventional 4 into 1 ,header flange is approx 20mm below floor pan.Mine is lower than stock with Z51 susp and have not hit them yet.Perfect fit , no 2 plug is a bitch as pipe bends back and in over plug to clear steering shaft.

Pacemaker, very interesting.
More info here (http://www.pacemaker.com.au/GMH.htm#8m3corvette). They're mandrel bent with no AIR pump lines and it says you need a hi torque starter as they may not clear the original one.
I'd love to see pics 87Z51.
-
I think '88's and up have high torque starters as standed fitment .That's great info there 87Z51, I'll keep this in mind.

If I use these pipes what of the air pump system!. How can I replace the air pump itself with the serpentine belt and all. Can you get another belt that is shorter or do I have to get one of those kits that bolts in place of the pump. The EGR pipe will I still have this hooked up or do I block it off. What effects does this have on the ECM. With the pump removed the engine bay should look a lot neater. Has anybody done this before any answers and pic's there guys. ( so many questions)

You have a few options with regard to the air pump. As you seem to be aware there is a kit available to replace the air pump with an idler pulley. I don't know if it is possible to just use a shorter belt without fowling other things in the engine bay on your car (although you can get away with a shorter belt on 84's).
You can also get an EGR block off kit. It's a simple metal plate that bolts into place.
If you want more info or pics I can email you pics of some setups and give you more details.
The alternative is to just route the lines out of the air pump somewhere out of sight and keep the system in place - it depends on what way you want to go.
Any of the options available are very easy to do.
-
Oh, and with the EGR from the exhaust blocked off you will not get any codes. Some 90-91 cars get codes when you play with the intake but that is related to the MAP system (instead of the MAF system in your car which is not subject to the same issue). At any rate the code you get on 90-91 when playing with the intake is more a nuisance than anything and doesn't cause any issues with the car.
Removing the pump and related plumbing definitely cleans up the engine bay as well as making life easier when you work on the car. Having said that, you will be fracturing a few laws by doing either of these mods.
-
Cheapy.
Remove AIR pump , open up , knock out fibre vanes inside and replace.Looks stock , and just acts as a big pulley.
Lots of money.Buy pump eliminator from US.
US$160+ depending on style you want.
Both ways reuse the stock belt
re the Pacemakers.
Clears stock late starter (Denso?) with ease , can even remove while headers in place. Will not clear early large (Delco ) unit.
Email me for pics of pump eliminator bracket fitted.
-
So I take it 87Z51 you don't run an air pump system with the pacemakers, as they don't come with them , do have any problems come rego time.
-
I would imagine they wouldn't know if it was supposed to have an air pump or not. Emissions tests are easy as you just play with the timing.
-
That's what I thought , I don't think late model engines have air pump's e.g. LS1's and such. My son has a late model monaro and I don't think it has a air pump. If all the plumbing is removed from the car they probably wouldn't know any different.
-
Never had a mechanic check emission gear on any car.
If you were worried about it , would be no problem to weld the EGR riser off the old manifold on to the new headers in the same position so as to retain EGR.
Some brands of header available in the US have this provision for California cars
