Title: Paint
Post by: Brutus on May 16, 2005, 08:21:46 PM
.....so I fitted a passenger's side mirror to the 64 yesterday. Every little bit helps when you're driving from the "wrong" side of the car.

Mick...the paint on the 64 is acrylic and if it weren't for the few flaws  in the body I'd be reasonably happy with the paint as it is, but since I will have to fix these nicks I will be stripping the whole shell and starting from scratch.
Of course it will be black again with possibly some silver stripes over the top, but I will almost certainly do it in acrylic again. Reason being, it's easy to spray, easy to cut and maintain and I can do it all myself with no fear of contaminating either myself or the precious ozone.

that makes me feel much better about my decision of getting the car painted in acrylic, heaps of people have been trying to talk me out of it but i want acrylic basically for the same reasons. I just never see 2-pak look as flat as acrylic eg:- orange peel.

I've colour sanded both 2 pack and acrylic paints and it's all but impossible to get a perfect finish on the 2 pack paint due to the inherrent toughness of the finish and don't let anyone kid you that 2 pack is perfect as it is straight off the gun either.
You can be the worst spray painter around but still make a decent go of an acrylic finish if you have the patience to do a good job of colour sanding it.
You'll find that most of the trick paint jobs in the US these days are done with acrylic anyhow.

I will agree with you that acrylic is definately more forgiving especially for the inexperianced painter, but dont be fooled you can slice and buff 2 pac quite easily, as a matter of fact i did my Hilux that i panted in 2 Pac just last night, sliced it with 2000 grit wet and dry and buffed it, paint looks flat (not peely ) like glass. There are differences in the paint systems you use and some are harder to work with than others in 2 pac and can require more work. The advantage of 2 pac over acrylic is it dosent lose its shine anywhere nearly as quickly as acrylic there for less work to maintain the quality of finnish. You are right though alote of people still use acrylic for show cars but again this is great if you have the time to keep up the polish and keep it out of the sun.
I can prove this theory quite easily My sister has a car that was factory painted in acrylic  91 model and was involved in an accident 3 months after she bought it. the repairs were painted in 2 pack and for the last few years you can really tell the difference as the acrylic has faded far more, i give it a buff looks good for about 3 to 4 months and then sh#t house again. 2 pac paint will outlast acrylic in NORMAL everyday circumstances by far with far less polishing needed.
