I've just recieved my 77 corvette and im having troubles getting rego because nobody can find the engine and chassis numbers, can somebody tell me where they might be please?
-
Chassis no. is left pillar, just look through the windscreen.
I had some probs with mine (1980) coz they could not find a complience plate- however upon investigation I found out through the RTA that I did not need one- somthing about age and when it was imported- I forget the details now but Ive printed out the rules at the time so i can easily look them up if you need them.

ahhh your a champ, i found the chassis #
still need to find the engine # tho, its a small block
-
In front of the head on the drivers side, if right hand drive, there is a small metal pad casting of the block that sticks out past the head with the engine number stamped in it. you might need to clean any grease off.
Inside the passanger side door pillar, if right hand drive, With the door open you should find a metal plate riveted to the pillar. There will be series of numbers and letters. These refer to the month the car is manufactured, colour, etc. They use letters to define the months, not numbers.
Let us know the numbers and letters and we can let you know what it all means.
Any pictures?
Let us know how you go.

If the block has been decked you may not have any numbers!

Nice looking machine. I'll get back to you shortly on their meaning but straight away I'm 99% sure you do not have the original motor, but don't quote me on that yet.
Do you have the numbers and letters off the little silver plate on the hinge pillar, between the top and bottom hinge of the passanger side door, [left side when sitting in the car?]

according to my black book the vin is for a 180hp,the engine # doesnt look right,shd hve a 3 digit c suffixby the vin it was the 14,860 built which means it was built in dec 76...total built in model year 49,213....john;32

I Agree.
The engine bolck stamp should have the VIN derritive. Blocks should be stamped like this:
V0101CLJ - (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code), followed by a second stamping,
77S414860 (year-VIN derritive).
'77 350/180hp engine suffix codes are:
CHD: A/T CA
CKD: A/T Hi Altitude
CKZ: M/T Federal
CLA: A/T Federal
CLB: A/T Hi Alt. Federal (early '77 build)
CLC: A/T CA (early '77 build)
Get back to me on the engine number.
VIN (CHASSIS) # 1Z37LZS414860
1Z = Chevy Corvette
37 = Coupe
L = Base 350/180hp
Z = Should actually be a 7 for 1977
S = St. Louis, MO assemby plant
414860 = Build sequence

My engine number is:
T073IZCA
IAS438768
Is that a good number to have?:an

It's not so much a matter if its a good number to have as if it matchs the chassis number. What is your chassis number?
[I'm retrieving the information off the DC site from C5D. I notice that you visit there. Im sure he would relay the information direct on your numbers]
I'm just helping out ozdood as I don't think he visits the DC site for information.
