Title: Amber flasher lens for Aussie registration.
Post by: crossie 1 on February 08, 2015, 06:16:50 AM
Hi All,

Finally started the renovation(just retired) of my 80 Vette which i have had since 1997. How do i manage the requirement of changing the standard red flasher lens to amber to conform to rego requirements on the C3. Or is there an alternative.

Thanks guys for the suggestions -- will try and get passed as is. But now have several alternatives to fall back on.

Cheers, Crossie

My '78 had the clear reversing lights converted using amber bulbs. I've also seen some with LED round trailer lights fitted.

red flasher lens to amber to conform to rego requirements

I believe this isn't compulsory; there's debate regarding how the wording of the requirements is phrased. I think it may eventually be a requirement but I was able to register with red blinkers and there's plenty US cars here the same.

If the inspector knows the compliance requirements, he will require that the turn blinkers are amber as required by ADR 6 if the vehicle was manufactured after January 1973.    :bolt::nag: :nag:

^^This. It's written in the NCOP guidelines.

I put amber bulbs into the reverse light socket and fitted a new white led strip above the number plate for a reverse light.  You will need to run a new wire along the existing wire harness from your brake pedal switch to the brake lights as the current system uses the indicator wires for the brake light as well.

There is another solution.

You can get bi-colour LED bulbs.

Here is a demo how they work on the front parking lights on a Mustang.

Of course they need the clear/white blinker lenses as you do have for Corvette back up lights.

You will then need to wire the blinkers to the back up bulbs; they are programmed so when you hit the blinkers they glow orange and when you hit park (and I assume they'll do the same with reverse) they glow white.

I do a step by step work sheet how to modify wiring to suit I usually throw one in the box with seatbelts.
It is definitely a requirement for an 80 model as it is affected by ADR's. I heard just recently that an instruction from RMS was recently issued to blue slip stations that the indicators had to be separated from the brake lites for all US cars regardless of year model haven't seen it in writing.
It is in your best interest to alter them as it is quite confusing seeing brake lite /blinkers/tailites all alternating on & off. Try standing behind the car &  put on parkers in sunlite then get some one to operate brake lites with blinker on

You car isn't post 73 though (based on the chrome front bumper) :)

It's not hard to do, you just need to run a new wire from the brake pedal to the brake lights, then connect the correct wire to the correct bulb to suit your plan of attack.  I moved the indicators to the clear lenses and used amber bulbs.  I then installed a white LED strip light above the numberplate for reverse lights.

I saw very similar blinkers today on a Sydney bus.

I think the bus ones are a little too small ones on a Sydney tram look a better option haven't measured them have both white  leds in centre & yellow leds outside look like they were copied off vet

Yeah, they're similar but not the same, they don't have the black ring in them and I think they take 3 screws if I recall correctly.
