Hello Guy,
This morning i decided to take the beast out for a run & put some fuel in here, when I noticed that the break pedal felt awfully hard like I had no vacuum. I then took the car to my brothers to look at the car, and there we found out, that the plastic brake booster had cracked from the diaphragm side, right thru to the back. :omg: I gather its the original one that came with the car.. See Pics... :grr:

Does anyone know whether you can use a GM Holden booster as a replacement, or do i need to buy a replacement from the states?.. I wanted to ask, has any one used a similar commodore booster, as they look the same :thud:

Looking at the Corvette Central webb, it looks like this must be the one....

At $400 I would imagine that black paint is covering up the Gold it's made out of.

And that's US dollars, plus you have to add shipping... oucch...... :tears:
-
I have don't keep abreast of recent cars, but I do go to one of those wreckers were you get the bits off yourself, a walk around the different models allows me to see what I can modify or update onto my shopping trolley. But I'm sure we must have members familiar with interchangeable parts.
-
Sirfixalot should know the answer to this.
-
Thanks Guys, ive actually found two sellers on ebay selling genuine GM parts that are about $335 -$370 with shipping. Just need to pull out mine to check backing mounts to be sure. I think its best to stick to AC Delco products.
However, in still going to see if anyone has them here. I also have found reproduction ones for about $160 shipped.
If someone still has use some holden part, let me know.
-
However, in still going to see if anyone has them here.
Scott at C.A.C. (ad at bottom of forum pages) may have a Delco one in stock.
Some options here:

Re Holden compatibility, call "Sirfixalot". His number is in the magazine and in the Club's contacts list.

I'd be taking a close look at clearances before fitting a new unit. Those 'pretty' heat shields look horribly close to the booster body and it would only take a soft or broken engine mount to have the new booster go the same way  Just a thought but that kind of break is not common
-
Hello Sabre, Yeah I see what you mean, never crossed my mind actually. Personally I thought, the booster being 18 years old and close to the engine, its gotten hard over time, and with the vacuum being inside, just punctured.. tho you can never be too sure!
I don't think its the engine mounts, I think that they may have been changed at the time the motor was rebuilt, tho I will ask the owner. From my discussion with him yesterday, apparently its the original booster that was on the car when converted in 1993.
So that like, its an 18 years old booster.
I appreciate your feedback regardless and will look at it again.. and see if the reason was the engine... my brother is a mechanic, so we will jack it up and see if it touches.
-
And thank you Gtc..
Will give Ponti World and Scott & CAC a Call first to see... But I have to take out the original first to make sure its the same one.
-
Hey Michael, if you planning to see Dave at Ponti World give me a heads up and we'll catch up don't forget I live in the Gong :thumb:
Jethro
-
I think when converted to RHD they either change the booster or master cylinder to get clearance on engine / mudguard so if you buy one ex US it may be unusable. Easiest way would be to take it off & take to a brake shop to get a comparable replacement
-
I'll stand corrected on this but I believe there is an aftermarket metal version of these. I may be wrong but worth checking out.
-

Your correct Cam, Just got off the phone with Scott from CAC and highly recommends going with the metal one, because its very close to the engine.
-
Scott's the man. A wealth of knowledge :thumb:
-
My 1987 had a split plastic booster,I used the booster off of an 84 as they were metal
I have been told since that an EL Falcon uses the same booster as the C4with the vacuum hose out of the other size as its an Aussie car
-
YEP...I just got off Corvette Central web site and purchased myself a metal brake booster (already painted black) to replace the one that's cracked. Its designed to suit 1986-1991 Corvettes !... its a waiting game now !..
I will upload pics during the process, when were doing the replacement for others if they have the same problem as a guide.
-
Be careful with the replacement and how far it pushes the brake master cylinder,I replaced the booster and had to replace tha master about 4 weeks later, and if it is anything like the C4 remove the seat before you lay down to undo the bolts
-

Thank you Ausrs for that advice.. Scott also from CAC also advised me to remove the seat, its alot easier that way. Im hoping the booster wont affect the master cylinder, as its running an upgraded system and C5 Z06 brakes...
Now you have me worried... damnn... it should be good....
This is the product that i bought on line...

Thanks Ausrs,
I was told to stick to the Corvette stuff, and not try different parts.. so being ____ and super cautious, I'm taking that advice.. but again.. its good stuff, and greatly appreciated.

As Sabre says - best check all dimentions as my C4 fire wall is a night mare, the steering collum is too far in towards the front - so god only knows what they have done with brakes. This conversion was done by a well known company in Qld. I know a lot of people rave about them - I would not p%& on them if they were on fire.

Hmmm... i think your talking about the previous owners because the new company running that only produce top notch stuff from what I have seen recently in NSW.. Let me say that mine was not converted by them, but by John Bondock who personally owned my car and took a very long time to get it right.
Tho I have been told, that the reason why this type of thing generally happens is because the booster is installed with the engine out and then its too late cause its too close to the engine.
Oh well, no conversion is ever 100% perfect..
-
Glad my car is still LHD
The 84 booster is a direct replacement for the later model cars that have the plastic booster,do a search on USA forums it is not as uncommon as you would think, where your booster is split at about the 5 o'clock position
my LHD car had it split around the 7 o'clock
I guess for longevity plastic boosters are not that great an idea however i guess that GM never really intended these cars to still be on the road
As for the EL booster I believe it is a PBR part so it could well be the same as our cars if someone wants to have a walk through a wrecking yard ....that being said its still plastic and personally i never want to have to crawl back up under my dash to undo/redo the bolts to get it out and i even had the column out to fix that gave me even more room to move around
-
And so it all begins, you I'll be happy to know that you are about to embark on long journey - with NO END! Sorry I've been to Mittagong twice today and I'm still a bit short tempered.
-
I purchased a genuine 88 booster while in Detroit used for $50us and spent $90 to ship it
its still in the car but the crazy thing is it has Repco Australia tagged on it .. was made here for the bowling green plant.
-
Sorry I've been to Mittagong twice today and I'm still a bit short tempered.
Sorry to hear you met up with Tonto . He has that effect on folks :banghead:
-
Yeah, not looking forward to the job at hand, but hey that's what brothers are for right?. , hes the mechanic, in just the pen pusher. .lol.
All aside, its never an easy task when the spaces are tight and its also not factory. Fingers crossed.
-
Sorry to hear you met up with Tonto . He has that effect on folks :banghead:
Then, I guess you should deal with the Lone Ranger directly.

There you go a plastic one on ebay usa complete with the Repco sticker on it
-
Thanks Ausrs,
I actually bought a new metal one from Ebay this morning, and cancelled my order with Corvette Central as they were out of stock, and pending delivery early June. The one I bought is an official GM restoration part (made in the states by MBM & not repco) for C4's from 1985-91. It cost me $200 all up with shipping from Illinois.
I decided to go with steel, as it wont be affected by heat, and future hardening.
-
I did the same its a one only time to crawl under the dash to remove the bloody thing :grr: :grr: :grr:
-
Ok, guys, i thought i would let you know where i am with this dilemma... well, this morning we, well I should say my brother commenced the task at hand... Thankfully, because of the near perfect conversion, it literally only took my brother some 45mins to pull out the brake booster... :omg:
First he had to relocated the water overflow tank located on top, then remove the partial inner guard closest to the booster (which is smaller in diameter) and then move aside the brake master cylinder.... He didn't even have to dismantle the dash, or take out the front seat to get to the pedal side... unfortunately the metal replacement booster was a no go!
Damnn. the push rod is shorter from the front and longer from the rear by 10mm, and not adjustable, well from a general perspective ..... arrrgghhhhh.... so now I'm back to square 2.. :thud: :thud:
It looks like I'm going to have to buy another booster (plastic genuine one), or try to source on from PBR Australia, as they do appear to look similar with .. lets not say it, the ones used in Fords !!!
Here are some pics of this mornings doings... I will keep you informed as things pan out, as this is a good exercise and trouble that I'msure will come up again..

Maybe some one has said this - but - did you try Ponti World at Albion Park - down Wollongong way.
He was good on prices for an Alternator (Delco Reme ex stock) and was $11 freight to Syd metro. But I was down there and picked it up. I had not used them before. They seemed very helpful ...
-
The pics are a great idea, and shows me that I must go around it my eyes shut, mine is an 87, and the O'flow is forward under the RH head light. I suppose I should pay more attention I future.
-
Hello Vettech,
Yes, i called everyone even Pontiworld. No one had one of these in stock. And everyone who i spoke to recommend the metal one. , it was even advertised as the correct one. I then called John Bondock who converted the car. Its the genuine one, so its not that its an error from our end. Hopefully i will have beta luck tomorrow at PBR Brakes.
-
Ok, here is a little more information and an update with the power brake unit..
I found our this morning that the PBR Au Falcon Power Plastic Booster is not interchangeable with the Corvette Booster as the push rods are different in
length. And there is no similar one made for Aussie cars that will also work... So i was told by checking with various companies from the guys at PBR.
Tho they could sell me one, that would be modified so that the push rods were spot, and identical in length to mine at a price over $500...lol
And that the one that I had purchased in the states, ended up not working . which I'm now selling if anyone has an early C4 and needs a replacement booster.
Im currently looking at trying to purchase an original one if we can source one in the states, or see if anyone can recondition the original booster.
Fun Fun Fun !!!

Sorry that this does not fit your car,I dont understand it though
have a look at this link it says that they all interchange with each other

Ausrs,
these ones are remanufactured and i was advised to stay clear of them. Also the one on the link is actually for 1992-1996 from my research. It is clearly identityable by the rear which doesn't have a boot.
The most important thing to factor in is the pushrod lengths. Im still working on it.
Yes they say are identical but, shi...t happens.
-
I was not suggesting you buy one ,I was only using that as an example of they should all fit each other as it says metal and plastic are interchangeable
What it the difference in length on the rod ? can you take it to a machine shop and get it made into the length you require or even adjustable ?
-
Ausrs, the original one is actually 10mm longer in the face, which is also adjustable and also 10mm shorter in the end. I enquired about having the new metal one opened, fixed to suit and it was like $500 to do. . Stuff that. Im going to see if i can get the original overhauled as they put it. Or see if i can get an original one in. . Will see
-
Bugger
it should be more simple than this shouldn't it
Good luck
-
There is a guy in Adderly Rd Silverwater NSW who recoes brake booster he is in the dead end which buts up to Silverwater Rd did my 78 one years ago with no problem & also sorted out push rod length due to my car having an earlier booster fitted

Thanks sirfixalot. , will check it out. Cheers

Thanks gtc and guys for your inputs on this matter
I actually found another place very close to me in Belmore.. Its called Marion Brake and Clutch Spares.
I got the booster overhauled (that's opened up, brand new face, which is from a Ford AU model) , a new diaphragm installed etc in under two days, and its also tested, and warrantied for 12 months. The original parts have been re-used like the bolts, the push rods etc and it looks identical, with the exception that the vacuum bit is closer to the motor, but this can also be placed to the bottom left as you look at it. :thumb: :thumb:
Here are the pics... Now to get the thing installed...

Million Dollar question, what was the cost ?
Jethro
-
Jethro,
The price was well worth the trouble and slightly more than what I paid originally for the replacement booster. :thumb:
I paid my brothers price (trade discount) as he has an account with Marion Brake and Clutch Spares. :bounce:
So all good... now its got to be installed... Sat ???
