Title: Thanks ..... for nothing!
Post by: Brutus on April 26, 2004, 08:11:02 PM
I might be looking at importing a Vette from the US if all goes to plan so I was wondering if anyone might have any experiences, hints or clues for me before hand. The car is in Florida at the moment and is still in the wheeling and dealing stages. Can anyone tell me if shipping items like cars only happens from the west coast or is there the possibility that it can be done form the eastern side?
I have a week to work out if the logistics and cost of getting the vehicle over here are worth the trouble or not. Whadayarekon?
Thanks.
Bob

around 5000 aud was the quote that Corvettes.com.au gave me. Including compliancing.

Ring up that joe's place in SA and the place in QLD. See what they can quote you I guess :).

Brutus.. try these guys.. they will ROLL ON ROLL OFF the car from Most East Coast depot locatons for about US$2200 plus $150 per US$5000 of insurance needed.. that gets it here.. but more to pay on arrival for clearance, quarentine, and tax's..
www.dependableautoshipping.com

If the West coast is needed.. we ship all up .. with all costs expect tax for A$2995 - secured inside container transport,  ex LA Bond store to Ex Wollongong.  This is a DIRECT shipment LA to Australia... ..not via North Korea, Vancover, Fiji  & Dunedon... etc..

I know the answer to question #1 but I ain't sayin' nothing ;39

As for the DVD, the old fart hasn't told me a thing, you have to forgive him, he's old and senile and forgets easily.  I'm looking forward to watching it though now that I know he's supposed to send me one.  Has the old geezer shared the one I sent with you guys?

Thanks Andy, Bob did tell me the other day he sent a copy of yours over to me so I'm waiting for the mailman to get with it, looking forward to watching it.  Feel free to make copies of mine if anyone has a DVD burner.  I haven't had much luck getting people to send C3 only video for the DVD I wanted to make, but I'll keep trying.

Andy...I've had more operations than I care to remember. Six months in hospital from a motorcycle prang tends to add a few extras to the list.;eek
Now where would you like to start?:b2
Oh yeah.......my new toy. It's at Scott's place for now and will be until I get over there in September.

Andy, I watched the DVD the other day, very nice!  I'm betting you have some experience in this unlike myself who is figuring things out as I go.  Hopefully the next one I make will turn out a bit better, and yours has given me some good ideas.  Excellent job!

I knew you'd seen it under your other handle of Flared69 Nik. What arrangements have you made to bring your own car over here and when?

none just yet.

My major concerns are with regards to the noise of the beast at the moment and NSW law stating that a car has to be under 96dB.

Once I sort that out, importing will be my next priority.

We may be able to work with each other. I'm unsure about the right companies, when I bought my vette Murray Foreman, one of the NSW club members who I'd expect you know (He's the stock controller, husband of Wendy the Librarian), gave me his business card and told me to speak to him when I was ready to import everything.

He imported one of his vettes a while back and said the only scratch on the car was on the tyre...

I think he's the one to call :)

I've yet to speak to anyone in particular about importing the car especially since it'll be the end of October before I get the thing ready for shipping.
As for your noise levels...are you running a chambered muffler system with your sidepipes? I bought back a set of STS baffles last time I was in the US and have them in my sidepipes now. haven't had them checked for noise levels, but they're far from loud. I'll be fitting another pair to the other car while I'm over there actually. My good mate Scott can get them direct from the manufacturer if you're interested.

yeah they won't fit in my original exhaust as far as I have been able to find out....

Nothing will.

I might have to get rid of my original in favour of the hooker system, which isn't my preference.

Hi,

I bought a 68 vette in Pheonix AZ.

I used SGS vehicle inspectors to check the car over. They do a 150 point check on it and you get the results over the web. You can even call the inspector who checked it out if you have questions.

I used a agent here. Nick Smith International Freight (VIC) 03 54706411
I found Nick very helpful and honest.

My car was packed really well in the container and didn't get damaged at all.

Total cost for Nick to do all the paperwork including packing and unpacking in Aus, import approvals and customs clearances, and etc was $2850aus

The car was delivered to (Marrickville) Sydney in 5-6weeks

The only additional charge was customs $55, Quarantine inspection + Steam Cleaning (if car is not new, you will be required to have this done.
TOTAL =  $220

So all up $3125 + gst

Because mine was a 68, i didn't need to worry about compliancing, or LHD.

I got the car registered in a week after importing it.

Good Luck.
