Title: Diff overhaul
Post by: mention1 on May 31, 2016, 08:56:04 PM
Hi everyone,
I've had 2 mechanics now suggest I have a diff overhaul, as it has a whine in it.

I went to the local expert and he said it would cost $1,000 - $1,100. This is with the diff still attached to the car.

I can change oil and brake pads etc but this is a bit beyond me. My question is does this price sound about right?

A 3.36 should not whine , in most cases.
the ratios in the 3.9 /4.11 will whine generally
Having said that, a whine does not mean you need to get is out and rebuilt .
Unfortunately it's difficult to change the oil in a c3 did that is not modified to allow it to be drained.
So it's hard to know if the diff is throwing up some metal
IE on the way out .

Are you saying they can rebuild the diff in the car,
It's just not  an in frame job.
It's a two to three hours job to get the diff out.
To build the diff you can spend a day or two to get it correct .
Im a week into the 12 bolt I'm building at the moment.
If you remove the diff , and take it to a shop a $1000 may get it done but I doubt  it.

Give award diff a call at Seven Hills very good and have worked on quite few of late.
$1100 sounds a  pretty good price if it's still in the car.
