Title: 9 inch diff

Maybe this is common knowledge or something like that, but...
What is it that's 9 inches in a 9 inch diff?

so long as it's not the "CLUNKING thing" .. ;-)

Isn't it the length of the splines ... ? I know the standard diff of the times was an 8" and most performance cars went the 9" option with limited slip (eg Detroit locker). If no one else can answer, I'll do some quick research on the net to find a proper definition.

I'd rather be saving my money to spend on something more worthwhile that shoving a 9" in the back end. If the standard rear can stand up to a souped up SB or a BB then what would you hope to achieve by substituting a 9" in it's place?

I'm just curious as to how a 9" diff could be better suited for towing purpose than any other diff. Granted they are able to take wider range of ratios than just about any other make, but that doesn't make them better or worse suited to tow.
