This visit took a lot of organising guys.

'Bootlegger' Dave is a mine of information with an amazing collection of stuff and he's a pretty dab hand at restorations, as you will see -- but only if you go!

Here's your chance to be up close and personal with the legendary huge (27 litre!) Merlin engine, that powered famous WW2 British aircraft such as Hurricanes and Spitfires.

You don't see one of those every day!

Venue is in the Windsor district, where quite a few of our members reside, so it would be great to see those turn up, too.

Dave's address is not being published for privacy reasons, so it's a case of follow the leader from the departure point (Westbound Caltex on the M4). As mentioned at the monthly meeting, if you would find it easier to join the convoy along the way, phone Events Coordinator Nick on 0411 126 383 and he will discuss the best connection point and time along the route.

I know its gonna be hot but at least you are getting here when the full heat hasnt fully hit. The lunch up at Kurrajong is going to be the hot part.
I just finished washing the boats here and cleaning the model room (the rest of the place looks like a bomb hit it).
Ill go to my other place and get Aggressor in the morning before you all get here.

have to admit....im impressed with the boat and the motor, cept for that bloody wing, that makes it look like a batboat...
but then again... if im reading right, its a very old boat.... or a copy of a very old boat.

The boat was built in 1961 and has been restored to the way it was when it crashed in 1972. It was undefeated in the 71/72 season. There is only one other Merlin powered Hydro in Aus and less than a dozen world wide. All are unique. Google search vintage hydroplane or you tube Aggressor Thunderboat if you want to see it running. ... and in its heyday, as Dave explained to us, by driver choice Aggressor always started from the back of the field on the basis that it ought to be able to catch and pass all opponents ... and it always did!

ah then that explains the rear wing then...
me thinks if it was built today the wing would be vastly differnt in design
dont get me wrong.... boat etc etc like this NEED preserving.... it just had some oddball (read ugly) styling in the form of that rear wing.

Original owner and driver Dave Tennet, then a 20 year old apprentice, commenced building it in 1962 or thereabouts, so that's the age of the design. He paid 120 quid for the Merlin -- a lot of money for a young bloke back then.

a mate of mine found a R/R MERLIN motor that was Supercharged from the factory[proto type]
The motor is now in the Canberra war memorial.

All Merlins were supercharged. They started out at around 1000hp. By the end of the war they were putting out almost double that with two speed two stage blowers.
The rear fin actually served a purpose and kept the boat straight at 170 mph
