just take a leaf out of Wayne Swans book

just don't pay for something else, and put the funds else where.

 Then blame the opposition

the  government  calls  it fiscal responsibility
an accountant calls it creative accounting
the court calls it embezzlement.
another vette enthusiast will call it a good move.
Some politicians/ Unionist will call it a night out with the ladies ?

How bad was the compression Jethro.

Mine was not great but was very consistent.

Hope to start getting mine stripped ready to have it removed soon.

Having trouble finding time but but need to get it done.

Will look forward to see how yours progresses.

Hey Craig,

1/  8:1 pistons fitted...
2/  7 rods polished and balanced other was stock.
3/ One head double hump other was standard however had the valves machined to suit.
4/ Rear mains seal, one half put in backwards so the sealing lip was in fact a wiper seal.
5/ Front timing cover was slightly bent where it had been prised off perviously.
6/ End float on crank had not been set up correct and chewing out / uneven wear metal slippers

yadd, yadda, yadda.... long and short is the motor internals looked fairly clean and in fact it had been rebuilt not long before however after being rebuilt it has appeared to have thrown a leg and fooked a head and the sump would also confrims i.e the damage as it's been welded and panel betted!  Someone has then done a quick tidy up and thus :mad::mad::mad: not to worry I'll get it sorted, just a little bit more time and money that what I expected.....ah, isn't that always the way:pat::pat::pat::pat:

I started out keeping my 71 stock looking/matching numbers. After rebuilding the original motor I hit that fork in the road you refer to Jethro and built an injected stroker. I problem I have is there is so many upgrade parts available that it makes it difficult to keep things stock.
In hindsight I should of done what Andy said and built an injected big block. I might have to do that for the next project!!!

Well Rob, as we all know crate it would have been quicker (less time off the road) and a more cost effective exercise  but I've now gotten all me parts sorted I think con rods and most of the hardware coming out of summit, Dart Heads (bear)  http://www.dartheads.com/products/catalogsearch/result/?q=11120010P%09&x=30&y=12
After much to-ing and fro-ing  everywhere Dart Heads are now coming form believe it or not :ohoh: a bloke around the corner from me in the Gong cause he had a set on order and they are currently at the wharfs in Aust, Summit and evryone else was saying mid June to july for est delivery on the heads I wanted.
Gear box waiting on
http://www.ebay.com/itm/350560902025?item=350560902025&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:eRTM:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr#ht_500wt_971 landed this week so should be back together next week....

HEi Dizzy is in Melbourne getting calibrated, Radiator is ready to pick up... waiting on Zip to get in stock the correct H. Duty (tapped treaded) Slip Yoke and resend it that way can finalise the drive shaft and balance...
Piston set I ended up getting form a bloke on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/3504331565....33?item=350433156533&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr    No No Not using that rings set just the pistons, again Summit and everyone else said mid June for delivery... so all going to plan I reckon we should be getting all the parts within the next week or so.... therefore allowing the machine shop to machine block to suit pistons and all going to plan, pre assemble end of month, early June, final machining and reassembling, so hoping (fingers crossed) end of june back on the road? The game plane was to have her back on the road for me birthday june 12th but ya know how things go:

By the look of those pistons you must be keeping the compression ratio low.
You will be able to the low octane fuels.

what about something like these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-CHEVY-350-4-030-BORE-6-00-ROD-FORGED-DOME-PISTON-SET-PROBE-SRS-13723-030-/251066916668?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a74c11f3c&vxp=mtr
and burn 98, get the advance up to mid 30s, and make that mouse  run.:drag:

I am sure there was some sort of engine package that had alloy heads
Like the L89 mmmmm oh yes that's a big block
I think the angled plug aluminium heads came along in the mid eighties.
You know my opinion

Mate I know I am  most likely preaching to the wise here
But make sure those linkages are adjusted before the box is back in the car.

A pain the the rear  to adjust after   that box is fitted.

Can I make a suggestion  here
Before fitting the box,  get an adjustable pivot ball
Mcleod   do one PN 16908

You can get the  through out fork in the best position.
for maximum clearance. ( from the body at full release position   )

Jeff has an aftermarket shifter in his car is easy to adjust because when I fixed the trans tunnel for him I allowed for a small window in the side, made him a key to line up shifter gates in nuetral. Then it is simply a case of  adjusting the linkage to slide onto shafts on box

Jethro, check those valve guides on those Dart heads.  I had a brand new set, cast iron, fitted to Priscilla when we did the motor and they all wore out real quick and I ended up burning oil.  Found out that there was, back then, a common problem with Dart valve guides, too soft a material used.  Ended up putting in K liners and not a problem since.

Hmmm but how long ago was that camo? same could be said bout those probe pistons I got told they had issues 3 years back with Q.C. and the variance was anywhere between +_ .001 - +_ 004 of a inch...?

Jethro
If you got bare heads
I would change out the guides
For a good quality Australian guides.
Cheap insurance.
We  import heads for cat out of the US it's standard practice for us we remove the guides and replace them.

Just treat the heads as cores
You will get a better result long term

Jethro I would not expect anything less for a reputable engine builder.
Oven if it only came down to knowing the fit of the guide in the head
There is to much riding on the result to just accept that some one else in another country has done it correctly

The people putting these thngs together  will not be the one you go back to if it all goes wrong

I know head rebuilders who would replace the guides even if you  would dont ask them to

As in the people you are using
Their already doing it for your benefit and their piece of mind.

Finally coming around the corner and I can see the back straight away:luv::luv:
All the polishing & balancing has been done now....
Pistons with gudgeon & rings is 58.8 grams each lighter than old.
Total weight of new rod is 39 grams lighter.
Reciprocating part of new rod is 6.5 grams lighter & rotating part of new rod is 32.2 grams lighter than old one. Not bad for larger diameter & stronger pistons. & stronger rods. Also today had piston fitted to rods. Next week pre assemble work out deck hight, decked  and accurate calculation of cam, lifters, spring retainers & lock that will be ordered from Crow Cams

Hello beautiful :thumb:

Hey buddy, some advise.  Get a fitting made up so you can fit the throttle cable to the large hole at the top.  Makes the throttle so so much lighter under the foot and far better throttle control.  Just make sure if you do that you still get a WOT

Had no problem on the 77.  I may have had to modify the pedal a little to get enough travel.  It was a long time ago and I cant remember

I know I have a different throttle cable being a right hook.  Get this, off of a Sigma :banghead:

Undercoted  engine bay side
Top is runnered back to undercoat
Waiting for a warm day
I am using a two part epoxy undercoat, not what I am used to
The last time  I did any real automotive painting
Nitrocellulose lacquer was  the paint to use
I am learning new thing
But  the prep work has not changed and just as boring and time consuming

Continued woes...

Lad's while I was building the motor I decided to send me gear box for a service , new seal and bearing the box was in good condition the only other thing I did was fit a new needle roller side cover with cam levers thumbs box went back in then the motor went back in and now the gear box is leaking form around the front main input shaft (not the lay shaft) my pretty sure box is a M20 = 2.52 1.88 1.46 1.00 wide and the gear box place is saying the front shaft has no seal and uses a slinger type arrangement and they can't do anything to stop the leak ? Whats your thoughts ?? I really wanted to stay with Muncie 4 speed...

Quote from: YLLA 88
Well Lad's got all me ducks in a row this morning and went calling on the gear box shop in Sydney that rebuilt my Muncie  took  gear box rebuild receipt, warranty , exploded views on Munchie, illustration of the way the front nut /slinger needed to be fitted, and a copy of some documentation for a gear box specialist in the  States which I found that  states .......
"About 25 % of the Muncie i take apart that were rebuilt before have the nut on backwards.... The nut is actually a oil slinger arrangement that is designed to vent the transmission and keep the oil from running out the bearing retainer..."

Owner of the  gear box shop seems a decent bloke and at the end stated  he didn't fit the input shaft to the box so couldn't garentee it wasn't incorrcetrly fitted so :x-

Long and Short is we argreed upon Box is coming out in 3 weeks time and being sent up to gear box shop to be inspected hopefully it will be one of three things..
