Hi. I have a 72 coupe and my mechanic tells me i need to have amber lights for blinkers on the rear instead of the red ones i currently have which came with the car when i bought it with nsw rego. Can anyone help me and advise me what i need to do if anything.Thank you in advance. :tears:

Mate he is correct
how ever there are quite a lot of cars that have not been changed of to comply with the ADRs
I see a lot on the road
being a 72 you should do the conversion
mate contact Sirfixalot on the forum he will be about to help you in this to get you complaint and make the car safe for insurance and other legal reasons
You can do the mod your self if you have a little basic electrical knowledge
its and easy fix
If they have not done this then may be you should check your head light to see if they have been changed over

Bfit is correct, but the ADR concerning "Direction Turn Signal Lamps" is ADR 6 which came into effect in Jan 1973. If your car was built before Jan 1973 it neeed not comply with that requirement. :thumb:

Other option is to try a different mechanic as it's already registered in NSW I reckon he's being pedantic

pedantic
You've been reading the dictionary again
I would go to a more agreeable machanic

Well at least one that knows the ADR regs

Shoot me an email & I will send you a step by step worksheet to do the job

here is some lite reading for you. to get you more confused
http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi_dl1.html (http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi_dl1.html)
VSI04 is the reliant item
reading this document you will think you have to comply.
Not So
fortunately most info has some ambiguity attached
when you go to argue your position you just need to know the laws.
If you have ever been to court you will know what I mean

It clearly states that he only has to comply with ADRS that were in effect at time of manufacture. He should be fine if it's a 72 shouldn't he? Know my 72 dodge still has the original blinker arrangement.
Curious racingem has the Corvette been converted or still left hook?
Anyhow going to save that page from RMS to it's own thread here for future reference
On a side note:
In mathematical terms, RMS, the root mean square, also known as the quadratic mean, is a statistical measure of the magnitude of a varying quantity.
Think that sums up our RMS pretty well... "the magnitude of a varying quantity"

Thanks for all the replies.Yes it still is left hook, and yes he did pass it .I looked at the schedule 2 of the road transport regulation 2007 and it did say after 1973 but in a smaller note it read lights should be yellow.Iam still confused typicall government rules. :drag:

Wow, now that was a light read, and damn confusing to say the least....
Don't get me wrong... Hmm.... but it seems to me that under Clause 4 (a), if the car does not comply with the ADR requirements in the first instance, then its exempt?
Have a look.. I don't believe a factory standard 1972 Corvette would comply with ADR Rules....
4 Non-application of Schedule-Motor Vehicle Standards Act approvals
A provision of Parts 2 to 10 does not apply to a vehicle if:
(a) the vehicle does not comply with a requirement of an ADR applying to that vehicle, and
(b) the provision of this Schedule corresponds to the requirement of the ADR, and
(c) despite the non-compliance, approval has been given, under subsection 10A (2) or (3) of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 of the Commonwealth, to place identification plates on vehicles of that type, and
(d) the vehicle complies with the approval conditions (if any).
Note : Section 10A (2) of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 of the Commonwealth deals with vehicles that do not comply with an ADR, but the non-compliance is only in minor and inconsequential respects.
Section 10A (3) of that Act deals with vehicles that do not comply with an ADR and the non-compliance is not minor and inconsequential, but the Minister responsible for that Act is satisfied that vehicles of that type comply with the national standards to an extent that makes them suitable for supply to the market.

It's a relatively simple job to convert the reverse lights into indictors and you can also retain the reverse lights (if needed)
I would probably convert them if you intend driving it to work and back etc.
Other (younger) drivers get confused with flashing brake lights.
But if just a weekender, find a more sympathetic mechanic.
sirfixalot is in the Shire (I think) and I'm on the northside of the bridge.
Let us know if you need a hand.

It may not be a requirement for rego but during the day with parkers on brake lites on turn indicator tends to get lost in lights going bright /dark you will get some young kid who doesnt associate red lites with you turning. Is a cheap mod that is in your best interest. Try your car out in the sunlite with parkers on blinker on & get someone to put their foot on the brake, & see how confused you will be

Yes it safer to do the mod
