Title: The Rack and Pinion Is Finally Finished
Post by: Cameron 77C3 on November 25, 2005, 06:39:53 PM
Well as most of you know I have been fitting a purpose built Rack and Pinion steering system to my beast. The prototype utilised the original tie rods and adjuster. As can been in this shot

The standard inner tie rods and adjusters have been changed on the new rack to Ford Units. The adjuster nut was made up to accept the Ford thread at one end and the Corvette thread at the other end. With the tie rods running close to the lower swing arm, using this styl of adjuster solves the problem of the clamp on the original adjusters hitting the lower swing arm as the adjuster was rotated during adjustment.

The final piece of equipment fitted to bring the steering up to standard was a late model style Power Steering Pump. The Bracket used is, again, a Billet Specialities unit. I had to modify it slightly to fit as my motor was off set to the left during the right hand drive conversion and the pulley on the pump fouled on the chassis.

The hydrolics is all fed from the new Billet Specialities reservoir tank which you may recall is fitted to the inner left hand guard.

The only slight problem I have is the bottom side of the pulley belt on the alternator, which is fitted with a Billet Specialities Bracket,  just glances the top of the new pump.  You can see in this picture where it use to run close to the original pump.

I'm presently machining up a idler pulley and bracket for the belt to run over so as to change the angle the belt feeds into the crank pulley and hence miss the pump.

We are now back inside the cock pit fitting all the rubber seals, electric windows, windscreen, etc, etc.

More pictures to follow as work progresses.

Whenever modifing a car from standard nothing is ever a simple bolt up, there is always one thing that leads to another, having to sort out each problem as it arises. You've done an exceptional job setting up and sorting that steering system Cam and it's probably one of the only RHD rack and pinion steer C3 around. Well done:v
