Tail light conversion? Distributor brand popularity?
« on: April 24, 2004, 11:52:27 AM »
So now im down to a few little things that need doing on my car.

yay.

Anyway, my main worries now are compliancing as I have about 6~9 months to get everything in order and ship bitch (thats currently my affectionate name for her) home.

Whats the deal with amber tail light conversions? I'm taking a pretty good guess that a '69 isn't exempt from that law? Is it possible for me to do it over here? And what am I looking for?

I'm going to change to a HEI Distributor and my tach is going to be switched with a '76 one so I can use an electronic tach drive.  What brands are popular in Aus? Is MSD widely known in aus? This is because im considering going for an MSD distributor but they require an MSD coil also. I want to have future compatibility.

Cheers guys :)

NIK, YOU DONT HAVE TO COMPLIANCE A 69 BECAUSE ITS 30 YEAR PLUS! BUT YOU DO HAVE TO GET A BLUE SLIP. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW GUYS THAT DO BLUE SLIPS, THEY GERERALLY CHECK THE CAR IS ROADWORTHY. THE ONLY THINGS THAT MIGHT NEED CHANGING ARE THE BLINKERS,SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY GET AWAY WITH LEAVING BLINKERS - AS IS! BUT MOST DONT GET AWAY WITH IT.ALSO YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO CHANGE YOUR HEADLIGHTS TO DIP TO THE LEFT INSTEAD OFF TO THE RIGHT!.BUT I GOT AWAY WITH NOT DOING THAT! WHAT I DID WAS HOOK UP THE BLINKERS TO THE REVERSE LIGHT - THEN PUT A ORANGE GLOBES TO REPLACE THE CLEAR .PERFECT EXCEPT YOU DONT HAVE REVERSE LIGHTS,BUT THATS HOW THE IDIOTS AT THE RTA WHANT IT.NOW SOME ONE WILL POTENTIALLY HIT THE REAR END,INSTEAD OF THE SMART WAY IS TO LEAVE IT AS IS.AUSSIES ARE'NT THAT DUMB (I HOPE) THAT PEOPLE DONT RECOGNISE A RED BLINKER AS APPOSE TO A ORANGE. ANY CHANGES ARENT TO HARD TO DO BACK HERE.

AS FOR THE HEI,I JUST DID THE SAME. I WENT FOR AN AC DELCO HEI WHICH INCORPERATES A COIL ALL IN ONE - FANTASTIC!.SO YOU DONT HAVE TO PUT ONE OF THOSE UGLY BOX COILS SOMEWHERE!.

AS FOR THE TACH, MY ADVISE IS TO NOT GO WITH A 76 TACHO!. I WENT TO A CAR/MARINE INTRUMENT REPAIR PLACE AND HE CONVERTED MY ORIGINAL TACHO TO ELECTRONIC! THEN GOT AN AUTO ELECTRICIAN TO WIRE IT UP. SIMPLE! IT WORKS PERFECTLY, AND YOU STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL APPEARANCE!;35

AND DONT CHANGE IT TO RIGHT HAND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!    OR ELSE!:20:20:20

I have absolutely no plans to change it to  RHD :D (btw, does that devalue the car?).

In regards to the tach, what I plan on doing is just swapping the faceplates and putting the 76 with the 69 plate in mine, so it will still *appear* original. Just it will allow me to have a electronic tach drive. I'm sick of the bloody giant tach I have strapped to my steering column. I can't see the indicator lights.

What would be the most readily available distributors on the market in Aus? I'm looking at going an MSD solution, are they popular in Aus?

I agree you wont lose any value LHD,the other good thing about LHD is you can pick up chicks easier being on the left while youre driving!!!!!.
you can buy MSD and most other brand stuff in OZ at high performance shops and on the internet! - but why not get it done over there before you come back. I order any high perf. related stuff from SUMMIT in the US.

I agree with 69DIRTYRAT - if you put the bits on your car before bringing it over you will avoid having to pay duty, etc on them when you ship them over to install them on the car after it gets here.

MSD is a known brand over here - don't worry about it being an unknown item here.

thanks guys.

well, the reason why im enquiring about popular brands is so that the stuff I buy here is future compatible. So I will be buying my stuff over here but I just want to make sure its easily replacable as I have learnt that MSD ignition coils are required with the MSD distributors.

Cheers :drink
