Don't get caught with any form of radar detector on board. Current fine in NSW is $2,200 (plus confiscation of the detector).

As far as i know, all police have them and have for 20 years or more !!

Aren't we supposed to be warned that a speed check is taking place with signs?

I don't see how a radar detector is any different.

A radar detector is a serious threat to NSW Government revenue, therefore is verboten.

Hmmm, I was told the new radars transmit on a signal similar to a mico wave and that as such it was not illegal to monitor this frequency ?

I had one a few year's ago. They send you a letter after 6 months, telling you the cops can now detect your detector, so you have to send it back for an upgrade.  Then 6 months later, same thing.  It gets too expensive to maintain.

IN NSW as I understand  .
its  not illegal to own a detector.
 it illegal to use one in your vehicle
It would be interesting to read the current  law  on detectors and get a opinion of a QC  If there are grounds  to put a high court  challenged up to test the Law
its all comes down to money
imagine if ever car had a radiator detector.
and the powers to be fitted emitters randomly on the roads
and turned them on and of at random
would that tend to slow  down the majority of drivers.
the only problem would be no revenue for speed traps.
 
Radars are only designed to raise money  under the disguise of a safety program

I may have used one a few times many moons ago before the points against the offence got really stupid.  The basic strategy was that the second you got an alert you turn the detector off so IF they could detect you there was less chance they could pinpoint you as the detector user.  What I found during the few times I used one was that actual police presence on the roads was such that it was hard to justify running one all the time.

Over in the states there is a police car on just about every corner, here we rely on revenues cameras and far fewer actual police on the streets.

Nowadays, as GTC pointed out it isn't worth bothering with one.
