Rear wheel spindle trouble
« on: May 02, 2012, 07:33:01 PM »
Ok here's the story, pulled my half shafts out to replace the Uni's and thought I would pump some grease into the wheel bearings with my wheel bearing greaser removed nut and flange greased bearings replaced flange, manual said nut torque 100 to 120 ft/lb,went to 70 then went up 5lb at a time and stripped nut and spindle at 85 so now i'm in trouble,I guess it's gonna need to be replaced and the trailing arms rebuilt any one know the best way out of this and where to get it done

I think this company has spindles

http://stores.ebay.com.au/Aussie-Diffs-Online?_trksid=p4340.l2563

Did  the thread strip on the spindle   Some times when a nut strips it  leaves the thread on the male part of the job
Its not normal to strip both at the same time.
Is worth having a second look at he spindels.

Gray
Reading my C3 manual it seems to indicate that the torque for the spindels nuts is 75 lb/ft
The manual is not very well set out and difficult to follow.

Mate I checked the thread on the spindle out and its not real good about half worn off,Ill get a new nut tomorrow and try it though.Regarding the torque a think the 75ft/lb is for the four bolts that hold the spindle flange to the half shaft ,could be wrong and now paying the price, can anyone tell me?

Thanks for that link 77CVT very helpfull and at least I know I didn't over tighten it,spent all day trying to get a new nut but it turns out that it's a 3/4 UNEF(extra fine thread)and not available even to order anywhere on the central coast so I guess i'll use the other side one dut I dont have much faith as spindle thread is pretty bugered
