Any camera buffs out there?  I was considering getting a digital SLR like the Canon 400D.  I'd mainly use it for V8 Supercar pics.

Any good?

I know nothing about cameras, but some one I know does and he takes some bloody great pics. He uses a Canon EOS 40D

Like I said I know nothing about cameras but this is meant to be a good one.

I've heard the Canon's are good.  Will only be getting a 2nd hand one as $1000+ is out of my reach at the moment.

Demonx is right.  Just got a Canon 40D and it is a great camera.  Sports mode captures images well.  Here is one at a mates place with my dog.  Note his yellow toy in the air just over his head to the right.  Still learning the new toy, book is about 1cm thick.

The 400D is OK, it has a cheap plastic body so dont knock it around to much. As a rule I dont buy anything secondhand when it comes to cameras because you dont know what they have been through! So if its cheap thats fine but dont expect to much, then if it works good then thats great!!! Always ask why they are selling it, obviously test it before you buy, problem is you cant see many faults on the small screen. generally Canon cameras are great, thats all I buy! Also watch out for the cheap lens kits they offer, generally they are ok for happy snaps but are substandard for anything else! Canon Ultrasonic lenses are good and L series are better (but expensive). It all comes down to what you pay is what you get!
What lens comes with it? for V8 supercars you would at least need a 200+mm lens to get a closeish shot (100-300mm would be good).

I'm looking at ones with a twin lens kit.  I've read the Canon 18-55mm lens is average but the 75-300mm is a better standard.

I'm upgrading from a 3.1mp Sony with a 2.6x zoom attachment so I guess anything would be better. ;43

Also looking at a Nikon D60.
