Yes, but.....
« on: July 21, 2003, 04:58:28 PM »
Well after speaking to an engine builder this morning I'm going to go with a 383 stroker for my planned 350 engine rebuild. It appears that with the way we intend to go and with some of the parts I already have that we'll be looking at just over 400hp and well over the same figure in torque. I think that should put a smile back on my dial.:22
The one downside is that I'll have to sell most of the parts I've been gathering from the States over the years as my original intention was to just go with a 355 rebuild.
If anyone's interested in some brand new name engine parts just let me know.
Let the fun begin.:22

Brutus, why don't you post in inventory of what you're selling in the "Sale" section of this forum and see what response you get?

Hi Brutus,
A stroker sounds great, been thinking of doing one myself!! Check out HPBooks "Small-Block Chevy PERFORMANCE TRENDS" Some good tips in that, like mods required to the block to clear the crankshaft and conrods etc. It does not seem too difficult. Good luck with it Big Guy!!:evil

A....I'll do that for sure as soon as I work out which bits I'm gonna keep and which ones are no longer required. One thing tho is that I will only want what I paid for them and considering I bought them in the States and paid US prices and not ours then they will be comparatively cheap indeeed.

Chris...I think if you wanted to go that big it'd be better to start with a 400 cu " block and the parts for them are a little scarce over here I think. I'll probably just stick to the plannrd 383 tho and settle for 400 or so HP.....Oh the worry of it all.:b2

I can see it now, this project will be finished about 2007 because Bob had to sand and smooth the block for chroming  ;35

Well I went ahead and bought a 'used' 383 off ebay last week. The only down side was that I had to travel to Orange to get it, but that's in the past now as the motor is sitting in my garage finally. For the princely sum of $2,000 I've got a fairly new, fully balanced 383 motor with a few niceties thrown in. It came with the appropriate harmonic balancer and flex plate which are necessary for all externally balanced 383 set ups. Also has a nifty set of gold Moroso rocker covers, a 750cfm Holly double pumper carb atop an Edelbrock hi-rise manifold, billet dizzy and a set of 350 to HQ extractors. The heads are only average GM units tho they have been shaved to produce a 12:1 compression ratio, but I have no use for them as the alloy AFRs will take their rightful place on this engine when the time comes.
The side pipes are being made up this week and I'm putting the finishing touches to my front spreader bar and Hydroboost set up. If time allows, I'll have the transmission cooler mounted and plumbed too. Pics to follow.

Sounds like you're on full speed ahead Brutus! Well if not now, certainly in the very near future!! What about the fuel injection and the engine management that you were thinking of?
Are you really chroming the block?!!!!;35

Dave... The fuel injection offer fell through for the time being, but if it becomes available again, which I think it will, then I'm first cab off the rank to score it. At the price I was given, it would be sheer lunacy not to take it.

As I said above, I won't be using them. Going with aluminium heads.
