Thats a good question, mines disconnected as well I dunno why, although I don't have a big block anyway.

With all the torqu of a big block its really hard to imagin it making much of an impact on performance, or fuel.

I can only imagine that people with vettes and big blocks especially just don't need em coz they dont use their vettes often and so when they break down they r just removed.

but what do i kno...

Mine was disconnected too. when I asked at the time of purchase I was told it was because they used too much power but I certainly can't see even a small block suffer at the load of air con.

well thanks for nothin Adam!!! only kiddin.yeah I went to a guy to get a quote to see how much to fix it,and get it running,but he found it hard to give me a figure,because i couldnt tell him why it was disconnected and what was pertentially wrong with it?.He had also noticed that every early c3 he had seen had its aircon disconnected.why,why,why.:(

Standy dude, I've posted something to the US in case there's a GM paper on it or something. I'm sure you'll find it's a case of people not bothering to replace as it breaks but we'll see.

I think the main reasons for disconnecting the A/C from most of these older cars is mainly heat (Vette related), but more often than not is the fact that the older A/Cs ran on R12 coolant which is no longer used and the cost of replacing the gas along with new seals (for the different gas R134) is too much...... they're just too cheap to fork out for the money to do it all right.

my aircon has got the gas conversion stcker on it????? bloody thing.when you say heat related what do you mean? did it make the engine run hotter???.I think my next step is to jetcoat the pipes under the cabin,that should cut it down-cause thats half the problem.I already have under carpet foil and a cover over the gearbox.BUT it still cooks.but then again travelling at 200 clicks takes any problems away!!!! IF all else fails I'll get the aircon fixed.:cool:

OK, I got plenty of responses on this one but in short, It appears the aircon can use up to 25 horses from the motor and repairs on most C3 models area apparently quite epensive.

Here's a couple of responses from the US ....

--->----->----
The antique Compressors do take away some poewr and economy, and 1.5 MPG on my
406/375 71 Coupe at cruise, though I don't have any track times with the AC
on...(:>)

Doug

-----

They do rob a lot of power, but in most of the cases, at least up here in
New England, the a/c is just not that important in that type of car.  Also,
your feet are on fire, especially big blocks, air or no air.  Regards, Ray

-----

What's and AIRCON????? I owned a C3 for 11 years. I don't remember having an
AIRCON, but if I did have one it was always connected.....I think because I
don't know what an AIRCON is!!!

RED ROCKET   92LT1

-----

You can feel it with 375 - 400 HP, though, I turn it off if racing...(:>)

The old compressors take a lot more HP to turn than the modern one's do, and
they don't cycle. There's supposedly a new POA Valve or some such gizmo that
you can upgrade to get cycling, which should help your MPG a lot (50%?).

Doug

--->>-->>-->>

There's more but yo uget the drift ...

Thanx for your responses guys ...

thanks for your help.I think Its a bit clearernow but I still dont know which part of mine doesnt work.looks like i'll wait a few months before tackling the aircon.I want to pull out the engine next.as for the americans,I lived thier for 3 years,they can be so ignorant and dum on so many little thing like "aircon".To aussies its easy to work it out,but they need you to spell every letter or they got no idea about what your talking about!!!!.but they are great people when you get to know them.

I tend to concur....just have a look at how they "mishandle" the English language in some of the other Furums, but having said that I will agree that 'one on one' they are great people. Far better than the accepted idea that Americans are all the same.

Sorry Guy's and Gals ;) to bring this topic back to life..I have read all that was posted now would this related just to the C3 or would it be the same with the C4.

My aircon is all connected with all its bits but no gas, got the gas done, but I was told that I need a new air compressor. I was given a price of $2500.00 in total for the gas, compressor, and labour..Is he for real !

Cheers !
