Author Topic: Interior Heat & Sound insulation under carpet (Read 7092 times)

I've got new carpet on the way... Now I need heat/sound insulation.

I've read some of you used the Bunnings foil type and others used the Clarke Rubber foam stuff.

What works best?

I've been looking at Dynamat and Secondskin and some of the other American products, but they are just so damn expensive. I want something cheap and local.

I know a few guys here have done their interiors and I've skimmed a few old threads, but I was hoping to get some "where are they now" comments on what you wish you had have done!

I had that stuff from Clark rubber, it was good I thought! Foam with silver backing.

I've also heard of the "bubble wrap" type silver foil stuff collapsing over time, hence another reason I wanted to hear from guys who have done theirs a while ago.

DIRTY RAT - did you use it for sound or heat? Did you notice much difference? Did you do the whole interior or just the floor?

I've heard that a lot of people do behind their door panels and the whole works.

I used that on my '77 but underneath the floor (held in buy glue, straps and penny washers). The difference was amazing! I haven't seen the car for a few years so I don't know how well it lasted.

I also used bitumenised strips that you heated onto the floor with a hair dryer but that didn't really stop the heat.

I would invest in making up some under floor shielding like the early C3's had as you will not stop heat from the inside.

I mainly used it for heat, I thought it worked pretty good. I'm sure there is alot better stuff but its relatively cheap! I used it on the floors and under the middle console. It got taken out only recently when I got custom made carpet put in, so I had it in there for 5-6 years and it was still ok. It didnt kill all the heat cause I still had lots of unpluged holes and creavises where the hot air would creep through. So make sure you plug everythink!

Looks like I'll be dropping into Clarke Rubber tomorrow o see what they've got for me.

Our local C/R is a pretty crap store so it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't carry it. Guess I can only try.

Do you know what to look for? Its about 1m wide, silver one side foam rubber on the other. It comes in various thickness's. I think I had 1cm thick?

Foam is a good noise barrier. You need a ceramic type wool [like a ceiling pink bat but much thinner] to keep out the heat. These also have a foil backing. I got some from Zip or Ecklers as an order filler. I'm sure you could source this locally. I got a foam/foil sheet once from Whitworths Ship/Boat Supplies [for a boat] might be worth a look? They might have something?

Just finished my interior with the 10 mm foam from Clark Rubber. $30.00 per metre.
Havnt experienced the effects yet, but it was easy to work & moulded to the floor & firewall easily.

Question to DIRTY RAT and AAJC -

With the thick foam - how did you fit it around the Compartment in the rear deck?

I checked out the Clarke Rubber stuff today - it was $33m - I found another place today that sells the old school mat style underlay.

He said he sells it to all the local upholsterers (and he named a couple I know are good) This stuff is 6 foot wide on a roll and $12 something a meter. So I could do a whole car for $35

It's as thick as the Clarke Rubber stuff so I'm not sure how I'll go about the rear deck... Need some input on this.

yeah I didnt use it on the rear deck! I have that stuff you're talkin about under the carpet now. I'd still rather have dynomat but it is expensive. The only think people say about the underlay stuff is that its heavier than other other insulation, whereas stuff like Dynomat is very lightweight and very good.

I didnt do the rear compartment either, But it was really easy to work using duct tape, glue & in some places I even used double sided tape, so I dont think you would have a problem.

I bought the mat stuff today - it was actually $15 a meter, I must have remembered wrong, but it was 6 foot wide roll and I bought 3 meters of it, so for $42 I'm doing the whole car and I'll have spare to double up in areas.

It's 1cm thick and I'm going to do the whole rear deck. Will cut down on a lot of road noise that way. I'll work it out I'm sure. Can't be too hard.

I'm more worried about the wheel arches at the moment but I guess I'll suss that out soon too.
