My experience when I imported my vette was exactly the same as Cosmicvette, even to having a dickhead Blue Slip Inspector who wanted an Engineers Certificated which was not required.
However you do need your Import Approval Certificate to get your rego.
I think I paid about $700 in customs fees, $200 for the wash and 10% GST on the price of the (landed cost) car which ncludes the freight costs.

Hey Daniel, I am bringing a 69 vette into Australia at the moment. I am using Nick Smith International for the import. His prices are very good. All up the cost for the import will be around $7000 grand after paying all fees.
