Anybody know if you can tell the difference between a standard engine and an L82 engine if there is no engine number in a 1976.
How did they develop the extra horsepower, did they have different heads which would have different casting numbers.
Was there any external differences.

The obvious external would be dual cold air intakes to the air cleaner. This was on the 1978 but not sure about earlier?
I believe most of the differences are internal; bigger valves, different cam, different pistons.

Try www.mortec.com  it is a site with chevy block and head casting numbers and where to find them,it may give you the info you need.

Thanks for the feed back , but I decided not to buy it after all.
It may have been to hard to export it out of the states without an engine number.
Also the inspection I had done stated that the engine, gearbox and diff leaked, it also had a crack in the body just behind the front bumper bar. But still it may have been a good buy for US$5500, It would have owed my about A$12000 landed in Aus.
