I've noticed my vette likes to pop when I engine brake which suggests unburned fuel entering the exaghst. Looking down the barrels into my carby I see everytime the accelerator is pushed it squirts a lot in one barrel and just trickles in the other. I'm inclined to think theres too much fuel goin in in one and not enuff in the other.

My question is why, and what can i do? Is it clogged or can I adjust it? is it idle mixture?

It's a Rochester carby.

To get a Holley?
To convert to gas?

To get the most out of agas conversion you'd be looking at least a top end rebuild ...gas cam and a more dedicated manifold, etc.
Holley?....well everyone has them besides a good Q jet is every bit as good as a Holley with the plus that you won't have to alter your throttle linkages. My vote is for a rebuild which is the way I'll be going with mine.

I understand the "get the most out of gas" thing. It's tendancy to rust non gas specific engine and exaughst components, esp if its not run on petrol at all. Then theres the whole performance side to it but I figure when the enevitable engine rebuild has to occur, then that would be adressed.

My problem now is I have a Rochester E4ME which was fitted to CA '80 vettes and all 81 vettes. The Haynes vette repair manual says:

"Because of the complexity of this particular carburetor and the special tools required to overhaul and adjust it, it is recommended that major sevice work be left to a dealer service departmet (yea right) or a carburretor specialist".

This sounds not fun and/or not worth it...

Brutus is absolutely right (dare I say it, When isn't He!!) Gas, all those conversions, Brutus has "the book". I also have it, it is a good read:drink. I had to read t a dozen times B4 any of it sunk in! No no really, it is very good and all the gaskets you will need can be found at Hume Performance. It is not such a difficult task. I took my car with carb to three so called "Specialists" and they did nothing except charge me about $150 each time!:20

The one we're referring to is Doug Roe's book which is considered the definitive tome on Rochester carbs. I also have Dave Emanuel's book on Super Tuning and Modifying Holley carbs. Both of which are prohibitively expensive over here....ask me how I know. Anyhow if you'd like to borrow either or both just let me know.
