Talkin 'bout the 68-82 Power Window Blues

We talk to a lot of 68-82 Corvette owners that have problems with power windows. Speaking from experience, we know that removal of the door panels is not a fun job. We will address the most common problems associated with power windows, so you can fix them right the first time, and lose the "power window blues". Save $ on broken glass, and water damaged interiors due to improper window operation.

1. Window motor dosen't operate.

Check fuse panel for a blown fuse or defective relay.
With Volt/Ohm Meter check for power at motor harness. To do this simply disconnect the harness from the motor, place ground lead of meter on window motor and probe 1 terminal at a time while actuating power window switch. The reading should be between 10-12 volts each terminal when switch is activated. If no voltage is present, or less than 10-12 volts, check the motor for good ground, and inspect the wires that pass between body and door (rubber conduit at hinge area) for breakage or pinching. If wires are intact, you should replace the power window switch.
If power is present and motor does not function, you will need to replace the Power Window Motor.
2. Window dosen't go up completely.

Inspect window regulator gear. If any teeth are damaged or missing, you will need to replace the gear. We have several options available.(Gear, Teeth repair kit, and replacement regulator).
If teeth on regulator gear are not damaged, remove window motor from regulator and inspect motor gears. Remove gear from motor and inspect worm drive gear. If gear shows excessive wear, replace the gear. A damaged worm gear requires replacement of the window motor.
3. Window rattles when door is closed.

Check regulator for broken mounting bracket. If it is broken, replace the bracket.
Inspect window anti-rattle cushions. If they are damaged or missing, replace them.
4. Window travels excessively fast.

Inspect power window spring. A broken spring can lead to costly repairs of the motor or regulator gears do to excessive stress being applied to these components.
After you have repaired the power window mechanism, lubricate all moving parts with white lithium grease, and double check your work BEFORE you replace the door panel by operating the window several times up and down. The above list and Mid America's great selection of replacement parts will make your Corvette summer more enjoyable.

Brutus:
Yeah I found that out even in the Ford GT coups I had before the Vette.........no comparison with the cars tho. I was even able to rebuild the switches with a little dexterity.:b2

Brutus,

Great article!

I have a funny issue with my PWindows .... the motors speed up as I accelerate. Makes it difficult to talk to people as I zoom past .. :22

Obviously an electrical problem that receives more juice as the altermator revolves faster.

Brutus:
Maybe you should accelerate before you want to talk to them then the windows would be down in time.:22
