Can anyone give me some inspiration or advice for a decent (not over the top) sound system for my 1970 roadster?

Well I would go for an MP3 player thats for sure.  On one CD you can have about 5 albums.  Space is a premium in our Vettes and the MP3 system saves ya having a whole stack of CD's laying around.

What's ya price bracket if thats not a rude question?

2 or 4 speaker system?

It's got to be a four speaker system including the two dash speakers of course. Haven't thought about price but I don't play doof doof so something decent should do just fine...

If ya like, I'll have my Vette at our club meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 5th Dec, Night.  You can have a look at what type of system I have installed and how it fitted in.  I have two 6x9's in the back at two 6" in the kick panels in the front.  I didn't go for dash speakers as I had my top dash bad covered in leather and covered the old speaker holes.

Price will determine the starting point so you will need to think about how much ya wanna spend.  From memory the head unit was only around $250 45w per channel JVC. Kenwood 6" around $200 and the Infinity 6x9's around $400. All prices are RRP.  If ya huint around you can do better.  As an example, I got the Infinity's for $300 on sale.

Hope this helps.

These days the new thing is getting a system with USB ports ,you can get memory sticks with 2gigs or more ,Plug in your Ipod  mp3 player and you can hold more songs on usb memory sticks that take less space. Even cd's are becoming things of the past.

Most memory sticks can hold up to 2 gigs of info, a compact disc usually about 640-700meg.

Ipods go up to 80gig nowadays.

(as a frame of reference, my 60gig ipod is just over half full with over 4000 songs all recorded at 256kb).

Sorry to throw so many figures at you in this post but the short version is you can now carry your entire CD collection with you in your car if you get a head unit that is usb compatible and/or ipod compatible.
