Hi, it's me again,the central scutinizer,

Sorry, just had a Frank Zappa moment.;laugh

Had a quote done and my repairer would like another door to start with, so,
If any of you have a 68 LH door in Excellent condition for sale, gutted is OK, shoot me an PM/email.
If I don't get a reply I will start searching in the US for one.

Why are they replacing the door?
If the frame is buckled ok, but if only the skin is damaged repair it, or replace the skin.
Another door will require a full panel alignmnet between the door and rear quarter panel and the front guard. The weather seal gap will also have to be set up.

I would be happy with replacing the skin but they are as hard, if not harder to find than the whole door. Shipping is not going to be much different either.

Door skins are $700.00 + G.S.T.
$700.00 is a lot of time one can spend on repairing a door skin. Door skins are easy to repair because most of the door is reasonably flat and you can get to both sides of the door. I need to see a picture of tyhe door. It sounds like a repair is all that is required.:{

Where did you get the $700 figure?
Is it a hand laid, Press molded or NOS skin? I don't want a hand laid piece so Press molded or NOS are the only options.
My repairer (and I) would like it to be "as before" the accident so either a new skin or excellent used door is required. He is working with me as he was the guy who painted it originally.
Yes, it could be repaired, but I would know it was not perfect.

The door skin is (PM) press moulded.
I understand that you want it as per original.
If you fibreglass and sand both sides of the repair it would be as good as new with the exception that instead of having a light grey colour it would be a dark grey/black colour.
I recommend a repair as this retains all original door gaps and original bonding of skin to frame.
If you just replace the skin you will have to paint the underside of the skin and frame, in order to allow polyurethane to adhere to the surfaces. Fibreglass glues if used can make the steel frame rust.
A replacement skin or second hand door will not align as the old one did, so fibreglass work will be required to realign the door to front guards and door to rear quarter panel

OK guys, just had the insurance assessment and the door is going to be repaired. I had found a second hand door in the US but it required almost as much work as mine. (Plus purchase price plus shipping) The joys of a 38 year old car with one year only doors!!
There is going to be a fair bit of "while I am at it I might as well...." So the Vette will end up with virtually a new paint job.

Yep
that is how it starts a small repair very soon turns into a restoration and a 2 year major drama by the time it gets finished.
But when it is finished you will have one perfect running/looking vette.

The online catalog says it is not press molded and it is up to $290 US now.

I went through a 5 year resto about 4 years ago so this should only be the time in the shop, hopefully less than 2 months total.
