The origins of the term "Brass Monkey" were explained to me after last years run... But I forgot all the details. :an Suffice to say I recall it relates to Brass Monkeys in the ship context.

Brass Monkey run for corvetters simply means a winter run
without the comforts and protection from the weather elements
with targa roofs off, windows and soft tops down
preferably organised on the coldest day possible for maximum effect
the challenge emotion and excitement shared by all who attend
Nothing to do with Balls or boats
