Glisten PC From PPC. Anybody used it?
« on: March 25, 2006, 05:46:41 PM »
Want to put a protective coating on my polished aluminium parts.  Particularly on my side rocker panels under the doors.  I had the anodising stripped off and then polished them up.

From their web site http://www.ppc.au.com/:-

"A major breakthrough in clear coat technology, Glisten PC is a high gloss, rock hard, water-clear topcoat designed for spray or brush application over all metal surfaces, including highly polished aluminium and chrome surfaces.  Utilising high solids moisture curing urethanes and performance in adhesion, corrosion protection, flexibility and UV stability.  Glisten PC will dry in less than 1 hour, but will take 3 to 4 days to reach maximum hardness.  After using the Glisten PC prep products, AP120 and POR 15 Solvent it will bond like no other product you have used before to polished alloys, chrome, polished brass, stainless steel and existing paint work.  Glisten PC has many applications, besides the obvious of stopping metals from oxidizing.  It is also excellent at boosting the performance of existing coatings for harsh environments where impact / salt laden / acid can damage regular paints.  Glisten PC is also tag proof (graffiti), just use a solvent soaked rag and wipe off without damaging the clear coat."

the company name doesnt ring a bell, but the company logo (the shield) is one that is used by a company that sell a lot of home handy man products out of bunnings and stores like that (seem to be more industrial products not known for quality) i would tend to steer away from it but thats only my thoughts, and the beast looks to good to take the chance.
i got the email i i will call you tonight

this is a very well known company that has been around for yonks, Glisten, I had a go at on sill covers, didn't work for me, left brush marks, may of been better if I had sprayed it on

I have used POR Glisten on most of the polished aly parts on my GT40 & have been seriously impressed.  At first, I was dubious about the "hammer tough" claims, so I did a test - cleaned up a test piece & brushed some Glisten on.  I left it for 3 days then whacked into in with a ball-peen hammer - all I got was dents - no cracking / peeling / etc !

I found that the best way to apply it is is one rather generous coat (everey time I tried the recommended 2nd coat, I had brush marks).  With one solid coat (using 5-10% POR thinners), the self levelling capability is amazing.  BUT, you must follow the recommended cleaning process with the right POR products beforehand.

I'll be using this for all the alloy/aly bits on the Vette - it looks better than silver ceramic coating, & is way cheaper & easier.

BTW, don't bother trying to use it on mild steel - looks good for a while, but then you get rust steaks.

Kind Regards,

Peter D.
