Hey Nik,

Check this link for a discussion on RHD Conversions in NSW ...

http://www.nswcorvettes.com.au/forum/viewthread.php?tid=483

For importers, we have at least one in the NSW Corvettes club.

VO -> Could you please post DW's phone number here if appropriate ?

Otherwise, I'll check tomorrow and respond with a name and number.

thanks guys!

now, is there an allowable time limit that u can drive ure car around before it gets converted? cause i couldn't imagine having to stick it straight into a converter place D: and it would be expensive in towing etc.

Nik,
I will be sending some contact details via U2U for one of our members who might be able to provide you with advise with regards to what costs to expect etc.  This is the "DW" that rebel referred to earlier.

Another good source for Vehicle Importers is the magazine "Just World Cars" which specialises in listing collectible cars for sale and available from "all good newsagents".   Many list what they are prepared to do for you.

There is usually several ads there for firms offering to full services to import vehicles from the US with prices ranging from $2,500 to $3,000.... which isn't that much more than the cost of 20' container from LA to OZ.

But remember, that getting the car to OZ is the easy part... the process of getting it off the wharf, thru customs via a bonded warehouse(customs agent) and into your hot little hands will cost extra such as...

paying the Import Agent for a multitude of importation charges (e.g. Import Duty, GST, Quarantine, wharf, transportation, container cleaning, warehouse costs, and agent admin fees).   Which when I did it in 2004 the cost incurred was $6,800 (which was in addition the cost of shipping the car to OZ).... so it aint a cheap exercise.

Anyway, that is the short story, the unabridged version is here http://members.ozemail.com.au/~daniel42au

What generation are you importing.. C3, C4, C5?  Many RHD Converters specialise.

.... Good Luck...

I used European Logistics. Can't say I was real impressed with the way things were handled. Far from it, it took way too damn long to get it here, with bad communication being the main problem. However, I got my '78 out here for considerably less than the figure above. Shipping, + duties and taxes, port charges, steam cleaning, etc, all amounted to about 4 grand for me. Part of that is getting the person/dealer in america that sold you the car to write you a "second receipt" that you show to the govt. when you go for your import approval. I won't elude to what this second receipt says, but I think you can work it out :)

good luck with it ;)

Double Woops...  I was just browsing thru and didnt bother to look at the date... I guess I was too focused on the topic ... which interest me because the importing process for many, including me, has a lot of mystery surrounding it... probably because it is such a 'closed shop' to the public.

Oh well, Anyway, it is a topic which seems to come up often...    ;mmm
