C4 1990 Centre Consol / Dash

(1/1)

Vettech:
I made the mistake of removing my centre consol - top A/C outlet

But one thing leads to another - now half of the dash / consul is out.

It became obvious that "something" was wrong, so the a/c duct is out, instrument surround out, shifter plate out, side panel out, always evident is the tendancy for wrong screws and stressed panels, its like someone stood on everything whilst the screws were thrown in lickity split.  It became obvious that the glove box had to come out as it had 2" screws where 1/2" was OEM, plus extra plastic pieces glued in ??? Very strange.

Removed g/box lid, removed pass (LH) side glove box panel which had 2" screws in top and one down the bottom near the seat belt stalk bolt, but side panel wont budge.

Cant quiet get to the screw, So out comes the pass side (LH) sport seat. The seat belt stalk is an Aussie mod, since the US seat belts do not meet or comply with Australian Safety standards. Gone is the soft webbing style stalk - in its place a solid steel stalk similar to early GM Holdens, Toyota's etc BUT there is always a BUT, its bolted down hard onto the transmission tunnel. It cant move with the seat, hence seat/track damage and the g/box side panel is crushed and can't sit down where it should be, its 25mm/ 1" high.

Once s/belt stalk removed, the panel drops down into it's correct position, the 2" long screws are no longer needed, the plastic infill piece gone, the g/box lid now sits into its correct position and then the shifter plate also drops effortlessly into the correct position.

All this misfit is caused  by some one rushing or just simply not taking any care with the conversion.

With rain and Sirfixalot away in Alice - I'll just have to wait to resolve the s/belt stalk mounting.

Vettech:
Pic of the Pass side (LH) stalk removed.

C/w BOLT,  spring washer and a captive flat washer.

Once fitted the stalk will not move with seat travel or passenger needs.

bfit:
There most likely should be a stepped spacer in there
Bfit

Vettech:
Either that or a bolt with non threaded section.

I have a small selection of bibs & bobs, but the threads are wrong or the stalk wont go over the step.

So I'll wait till Sirfixalot thaws out and he will sort it out.

sirfixalot:
i'm back, do you need 1 or 2
