C4 Head Light Motors - Delrin Slugs
« on: June 02, 2017, 01:35:32 PM »
Guys, finally pulled the RH Headlight out, PITA getting it off the H/light assembly.
All gears OK but naturally the Delrin Slugs are dust.
Tried two placed - nothing avail.

QUESTION - Has any one got a spare kit ?

Has any one used something else ?.

These slugs look like short lenghts of "Hot Glue Stick". (Um tempting)
But hot glue is poly ethelene or propolene and have lower melting points - so maybe not.
MAYBE you have used something else - now is the time to share.................please!

OOOOk - wealth of info coming in ummm.  Has anyone replaced the Delrin slugs recently.

I now know that Delrin or Acetal or Polyoxymethylene is like nylon, and I have ordered a 10mm dia stick from Melb.
But some US suppliers ( eg. ZIP) display catalogue pics of the slugs ~10mm x 13mm but some have holes thru the middle others not.

So if you replaced these in an 88~96 headlight, and you remember the slugs, could YOU let me know - holes or no holes.

Once I get my order, I can cut slugs and if necessary drill them.
These slugs replace the original heavy gell in the headlight gears that allows drive but also slippage to prevent stripping gears.

Oh! - the reason I'm doing this - since a kit (3) is US3.99~8.99 is because my daughter tried to order and they wanted US$72.70 for postage WTF...

Hot rodders use knitting needles on collapsible steering columns when mixing & matching bits to replace the shear pins.  What do they do, are they some sort of shear pin on the drive mechanism?

Sirfixalot or should I say " Mien Herr Fixalot" since you've been away in Europe a while. R U back now ?

Hoping to get my stick of Delrin today. The slugs allow the gear centre (which direct drives the h/light) to overide or slip.
The force to do this requires a surge in current, in theory this is detected by "current sensing" which cuts power.

Now a question - these motor gear box assemblies are usually filled with grease, there was nill grease or gell,  just a white grit left inside.
Most youtubes say fill with grease - cant see any saying which one, except a vague reference to " Lithium Grease".

So! Nylon gear + Bronze worm drive + cast and steel clutch centre + Delrin slugs = "A Grease"  But which one !?!?!

Any ideas would be muchly appreciated as I'm going into Corvettation Withdrawls" having not driven the car for three weeks.

Its amazing how changing one word etc in a Google search gets far differing responses.

Located a site that is emphatic that "White Lithium" grease is correct OEM grease.

Ok -  the 10mm x 300mm Delrin rod arrive late Friday. Been away all weekend.

Seen many posts urging "White Lithium Grease" and then some say dont use it.
I think if WLG will last 10~20 years, then thats ok 4 me,

Have two packs of WLG in the garage - cant find either. Time to squeese a fresh coffee.

Rebuilt RH headlight motor, all together Tues, refit assy to car, thought I'd better manually try it before powering it up.
Wont go up all the way - jambing.

Pull the assy out of the car, temper is now exceedingly short. It can only be the funny flattened "Y" shaped washer on the output shaft,
but I followed a youtube thingy - but maybe it was the LH side youtube not my RH side. Rebuild with washer turned over.

This morning whole assy back together, put into car, manually OK. Connect power - holly crap batman - it works.

If you ever see a youtube saying it takes 10mins to get it out, 15mins to fix it and 10mins to put it back - thats a lying COS - dont believe it.
One problem down,1987 still to go!.........

That must be what "B" means when she calls me a stuborn old bastard fool.

Works great now, having said this I bet the LH one will pack it in, but I now have plenty of Delrin left.
