C4 84-87 Wheels and Tyres
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:59:51 PM »
C4 84-87 Wheels and Tyres. I currently have 98 HSV Senator Wheels and would like to go back to original, however I dont like them,  I kinder like the later 88-90 wheels, the originals are 16x8.5 and 16x9.5 but my book only gives one tyre as P255/50VR-16. I thought maybe they have front smaller than rear but surely the tyre size would also go up to say 275?!?!?!?!. Whilst the 88-90 are the same, they also have a17x9.5 for ZR1 and I would assume these will NOT fit nonZR1 vettes. So my Question is 1;  will 88-90 std wheels fit 84-87.
Question 2; Does any one know of - or have as set of 88-90 they may wish to sell.
Being a very trusting sole I would prefer them to have rubber on, so I can check for cracks.
If none available I would also consider original 84-87 wheels. (any one got a Holden !?! - there could be some nice wheels available soon)

Sorry about the phone Bob, when i had my heart attack, they had me fired, paid out and threatened police action for return of car, phone, laptop, computer and Ipad all before I got out of Liverpool hospital the next day. Of course they didnt count on "B" she gave them a quick lesson in Workplace Relations and what their responsabilities were - with the help of the Fairwork Commision.

You'll need spacers to put 88 - 96 wheels on your 87. The offset is greater post 88. Ecklers have them. If you put late wheels on your 87 they will foul on the front when turning.

I had a feeling that there was an issue in sizing. those Ecklers are not just spacers, they are an adapter, I would hazard a guess that the stud pattern is different, otherwise for $199 I would take off discs and press out the studs and put in longer ones and use the alloy spacers that were on these Senator wheels before I machined out the centres to allow it to sit right down onto the hub, the Senators dont hit or interfere but then they are not as wide (˜ 235ish). Why is everything so bloody hard!?!?!

Here is another question - 84 - 87 have 8.5" front and rear - Yes?
The ZR1 had 8.5"/9.5" or 9.5"/9.5"  any one ?!?!

Found my buyers guide. Now I'm more confused. It says, 84˜87 are P255/50VR-16 on 16x8.5, 16x9.5. But why put 255 onboth rims !???!
The book also says that in 88 two wheels were available, the old one and the new 88/90 so do they fit or not.
Whilst the 88/90 spec say new wheel is called a 12 slot, 16x8.5, 16x9.5 and 17x9.5 I assume the 17 is for the ZR1 1990.
The tyres say 255x16 base 88, 275x17 opt for 88 and base for 89/90 and 235x17 for 1990 ZR1 - surely this is a misprint P235/35ZR17.
So to me the 88 had a variety of sizes, but 89 thru 90 has P275/40ZR17 on 17x9.5 rims.
What do our fellow C4 owners out there KNOW !?!?!!?.

Thanks guys - I was begining to think there were no C4 owners on the Forum. That website is very clear, I can see what Ray was saying, The Offset and Backspace changed by 20mm and 1" repectively. So I guess I need to see if this car is base or Z51 or Z52. It would appear that by the C5 & C6 GM had learned to limit the number of options to one or two.

the 84 to 87 offset is 32mm from memory and the later model C4,s run on a 56 (i think) offset...depending on what you actually want to run on your car some BMW rims will fit as they have the correct offsets ..some BMW,s have staggered offset rims so it is a little work to figure out what models are ok...its one way to get decent 18 and 19 inch rims that are a touch different, late model commodore rims are also compatible with the 88 and above C4

I have been told that the 88 and up stock rims do fit on an 84 to 87 BUT they do sit to far under the guards (more of a looks thing) ..I read that on a USA forum a while ago !

255,s are almost impossible to find in Aus but 245,s are easy enough to find
275 x 40/17 are usually available from a seller on Ebay of all places I can confirm that they are a decent tyre and the price is fantastic
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MAXTREK-275-40R17-98W-MAXIMUS-M1-275-40-17-Inch-Tyre-2754017-PREMIUM-/281528618456?hash=item418c69cdd8:g:GuIAAOSwiCRUi3uM

If you wish to use commodore wheels these are the adapters you need to run, they are safe but not strictly legal in any state ..you could also use these if you wanted to run 88 and up C4 rims on an 84 to 97
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Holden-HQ-to-COMMODORE-VE-Front-Wheel-Aluminium-Spacer-Adaptor-30mm-One-Pair-/272237523065?hash=item3f629ef079:m:m5UltWv3bn1tyCHaNT9WVgw

I hope that helps out somewhat

Ohh ..the only bad thing I have heard about the bolt on adapters is that they are nut centric not hub centric(unless you have them custom made)  so it is possible to get a little "wobble" that you cannot balance

Hi VP, I have a set of 16 x 9.5 in as in image. I have had them polished about 10 years ago without an issue if you are interested with tyres. I haven't thought of selling them until, let me know what you are considering to pay. Regards

Thats a pretty open question isn't it?, obviously I want everything at the least cost. So by image you mean the Blue C4 avatar?. So because I have never had C4 wheels I'm not familiar with them, aren't they all polished or what finishes do they come in?. I'm not familiar with your car, year is - err derr penny dropped - is a 86. So you had 17x9.5 as stock wheels on your 86 base model - yes? Sorry to be so nosey, but, what do you have now and why the change. These are the type they call "salad shooters", I've been looking (per set) and they can be as little as $450 for bare wheels in so/so condition up to $1200 for shod immaculate wheels. I would like to see them and I can move my VERY busy schedule to accomdate any time that suits you.

VT ..I had copy late model rims on my C4, I bought a set of 1986/7 rims in chrome off of ebay with tyres for $250 .........if you were to look at ebay at this moment you will see a few different options but all way to expensive
If you have decent wheels and tyres on your car at this pont in time just sit back and watch what comes up  ..............THAT is what i did

Hi VP, Sorry for the delay I have been intestate for work & returned yesterday. We can arrange a time to look at the rims if you like where I am sure you will not be disappointed as they are unmarked polished factory originals 16 x 9" with chrome centre caps. Let me know if you are still interested & we can discuss price & a time to inspect.
